Late Ratio Definitions 10/14/09

On the 14th, we were supposed to define the following :

two-term ratio
three-term ratio

part-to-part ratio
part-to-whole ratio

unit rate
unit price
proportion

so here it is.

Legend

Blue - Definition
Green - Example





two-term ratio:
A term used to refer to ratio that compares two quantities of the same unit to each other.

For example,

4:3

would be a two-term ratio.


three-term ratio
:
A term used to refer to ratio that compares three quantities of the same unit to each other.

For example,

1:2:3


would be a two-term ratio.


part-to-part ratio:
A term used to refer to ratio that compares two different parts of the same ratio to each other.

For example,


3:7

would be a part-part ratio.


part-to-whole ratio:
A term used to refer to ratio that compares all of the different parts of the same ratio to each other.

For example,


3 : 7 : 10 : 5

would be a part-to-whole ratio.


unit rate:
A rate with any numerator but with a denominator of one.

For example,

unit price:
The price of a single or one unit in a group or pack of the item.

For example,

If $1.00 was for 5 apples, then the unit price would be $0.20 for each unit or apple.


proportion:
A special type of ratio expressing a relationship between the part and the whole where the numerator is always part of the total and the denominator is the total.

For example,


There are 32 boys in a school of 60 school kids

or

32

60


would be proportion.
