Stephanie's 2 Minutes to Make a Difference Reflection

Google docs- http://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=0AdHudMRHEx_NZGQ1MmJmbXRfNDA1emNxYzhjcw&hl=en

Version 1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS5ATG-kLVk

Final Movie- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa9T8G4aOO0

The changes my group and I did was to add pictures. We added pictures into our final cut to make the video more effective and show people how much our environment is getting affective by plastic bags. We also changed the script in a way that it would make more sense, to the audience. The comments by the students helped us to see what little and big changes we needed to make for our movie. Then in the end the comments helped us a lot and made our movie better.

3 important points the expert helped us on:
- Our expert helped us with the questions and information we didn't find the answer to.
- He told us how he, himself can make a difference about plastic bags.
- He gave us new information that we didn't know in our other researches.
What I learned about from the expert was that the plastic bags piling up in the Pacific Ocean was twice the size of Texas, which shocked all three of us when he told us that.

At first we all emailed a bunch of other experts but only 1 emailed us back, the expert that emailed us back was from the University of Manitoba. When our expert emailed us back, he gave us his number. So we did our interview over the phone, and we asked him our questions that we couldn't find the answers to.

I think our movie was a success! Although we had so much complications on making our final cut, we still did it. My group and I all equally helped on the movie project.

While making out movie we had a little difficulty on how to put pictures, music, and audio at the same time just to make the movie the way we wanted it to be. But all we really had to do was ask teachers and classmates.

For me, the 2 minutes to make a difference was important to us grade 8s because when we do a project like this, we get to see more about whats going on in the environment. I really liked how we all tried doing different topics and learning about them.

I personally will make a difference by telling family about how plastic bags are ruining our environment and how much plastic bags are being used every year and to try and use less plastic bags and more reusable bags. I will also try not to use as much plastic bags myself.

STEPHANIE, Jasmine and Karra's Pay it forward.

PART 1.
What is Pay It Forward?
My thoughts on pay it forward is that if you try to do something, don't think it won't work, because one way or another someone can be inspired by you and tell other people. Even if you think someone won't be inspired by whatever you do or tell them, there is at least 1 person who would admire you. If people become more mature about things then maybe it can make a difference to the world. The project that they did in Social Studies was kind of the thing that we need fore school. I think this video was suppose to make us nice because if we are or if we know someone who is bad then probably this movie will help us to think twice about what we should do then maybe people wouldn't end up so bad in the future. I like the idea 'Pay it Forward' by helping three people, then they help three people. Even if you just do that, you can help the world a whole lot.

Part 2.
What was your pay it forward act of kindness?
- My act of kindness was that my friends and I got cards and lollipops and handed them out randomly at Polo Park.

Why did you chose this activity?
- I chose this activity because I found that it would be a real fun and easy way for people to see how kind we are by doing this just because we want to.

Who did you help?
- I think that I helped a lot of people to open up their Christmas spirit.

When did you do your act of kindness?
- My group and I did our act of kindness on December 07, 2009. It was the only day that all three of us weren't doing anything after school.

PART 3.
How did your act of kindness go?
- My act of kindness went great, I never thought that it would have been as great of a success as I thought it would be.

What happened?
- Well when we were giving out the cards, most people had a huge smile on their faces and gave us positive comments. For the people who rejected us, they rejected us kindly they said, "No thank you!" which was polite and didn't give our hopes up.

How did you feel?
- I felt great. At first I thought it would have been pretty boring, but then once we started making the cards , putting messages and giving them out. I got a feeling that I never felt before, the feeling that I did something good which I did. I really loved how after we gave out cards or pass by people who saw us giving out cards saying, "Aw, their so cute!" It really made me have more confident. When we had no more cards left, I really wanted to buy more and give it out!

How did the person or people react?
- Well some people really appreciated 3 girls giving them Christmas cards. When I was looking at them they had really big smiles on, I felt like i mad their day. But then some people were just really cranky and give us a look and walk away. But then it was probably because we were taking videos and pictures of them.

Did you ask the person or people to "Pay it forward"?
- Yes I did. That was one thing that I never forgot to say when I handed them the cards.

How did they react to your request?
- For some people we had to explain what 'Paying it forward'.

PART 4.
Why is the idea "Pay it forward" important?
- The idea of Paying it Forward is important because you can make the grumpy people happy and asking people to "Pay it Forward" can change anything.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?
- I really hope it made a difference, because my group and I tried real hard to even make the slightest difference.

And...
DON'T FORGET TO PAY IT FORWARD GUYS ! :)

Stephanie's Scibepost December 1 2009

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeey Guuuuuuuuuuuuuys (:

So today in math, when we got in class. Ms.U. Gave us letters.

QUIZ RUBRIC.
E- Excellent example. Meets or exceeds expectations. Complete, clear communication. Clear understanding.
M- Meets expectations. Understanding is evident. Needs some revision or expansion.
R- Needs revision.
F- Fragmentary. Insubstantial attempt made.

Then she gave us our tests back and we had to revision it.

After a few minutes she gave us the tests. We started to work on our green foldable.
When we got our foldable, we started to do square roots.

Square Roots
- side measure of a square-
- the number I can square to get the area of a sqaure

Sorry if there isn't much (:

How I Stopped an Alien Invasion Using Proportions

heeeeeeeeey guuuuuuys x)

ALIEN STORY: A group of aliens came to our planet Earth because they couldn't do proportions and they were jealous . So they came here to invade us and learn how . Then a group of intelligent students saved our earth by using proportions . Yippee !

So yea, the math homework was that we were suppose to pick 3 questions from pages 67, 68 or 69 . I chose questions: 18, 19 and 20 on page 68 .

18) At an amusement park, a new thrill ride was introduced . It costs $7.50 for 3 rides on the Wild Slider .
18a) What is the Wild Slider's unit rate per ride ?

18b) At this rate, what would it cost for 18 rides on a Wild Slider ? Determine the answer in two different ways .

19) Determine the missing value in each equivalent fraction .
19a)

19b)

20) A breakfast cereal contains corn, wheat, and rice in the ratio of 3 to 4 to 2 . If a box of cereal contains 225 grams or corn, how much rice does it contain ?

%%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

heeeeeeeey guuuuuuuys ! :)

Definitions:
  • Define ratio: The relation between quantities (or parts of things)
  • Define rate:Compares two quantities measured in different units
Questions:

1.What is the difference between ratio and rate?
  • A ratio is the comparison between two numbers with the same unit and a rate is the is an indication of the measurements of different units per unit.
2.Choose one of the questions page 60 and answer it.
  • Mala is shopping for honey. Her favorite brand is available in two sizes
  • Jar 1- 250 mL
  • Jar 2-1000 mL
A)Estimate which is the better buy. Show your thinking.

I think jar 1 is the better buy

Here is my thinking:

Jar 1 = 250 ml = $2.29
  • 250/250=1
  • 2.79/250=0.011=0.011 times 10 =$ 0.11/ml

Jar 2= 1000 ml
  • 1000/1000=1
  • 9.59/1000=0.0095=0.0095 times 100= $0.95/ml

3.Choose one of the questions on page 61 and answer it.

Shannon buys 12 granola bars for $9.96.
a) Determine the price per bar. Give your answer in dollars and cents.
  • 12/12=1
  • 9.96/12=0.83
  • 0.83 for 1
B)Explain whether your answer in part a) is a ratio or a rate.
  • It is a rate because it express to quantities in different units.

PART 2 !

heeeeeeeeey guuuuuuuys x)

1) What would the recipe look like if it had served 10 people? Show your calculations.
10/4 = 2.5

-ground beef - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 lb
-medium onion (diced) - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
-stalk celery (finely diced) - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
-clove garlic (minced) - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
-canned tomatoes (chopped) - 14 x 2.5 = 35 oz
-canned tomato paste - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25
-parsley - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
-basil - 1.5 x 2.5 = 3.75 tsp
-oregano - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
-sugar - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
-worcestershire sauce - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
-seasoning salt - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
-bay leaf - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5

2) What would the recipe look like if you had to only serve 1 person? Show your calculations.

10/
1 = 10

-ground beef - 1.25 /10 = 0.125 lb
-medium onion (diced) -
2.5/10 = 0.25
-stalk celery (finely diced) -
2.5/10 = 0.25
-clove garlic (minced) -
2.5/10 = 0.25
-canned tomatoes (chopped) -
35/10 = 3.5 oz
-canned tomato paste -
1.25/10 = 0.125
-parsley -
2.5/10 = 0.25 tsp
-basil -
3.75/10 = 0.375 tsp
-oregano -
2.5/10 = 0.25 tsp
-sugar -
2.5/10 = 0.25 tsp
-worcestershire sauce - 1.25/10 = 0.125 tsp

-seasoning salt - 1.25/10 = 0.125 tsp
-bay leaf -
2.5/10 = 0.25

Stephanie's BOB and Ratio homework

Heeeeeeeeeeeey Guuuuuuuuuuuys :)

Part to Part Ratios:
1) Blue to Pink 4:2
2) Red to Yellow 2:2
3) Green to Blue 3:4

Part to Total Ratios:
1) White to Total 1:22
2) Yellow to Total 2:22

3 Part Ratios
1) Blue to Pink to Black 4:2:1
2) Green to White to Red 3:1:2

The ratio I'm going to be using for the next 5 forms is 1:4.
Ratio Notation:
1:4
Fraction:
1/4
Decimal:
0.25
Percent:
25%
How to make an equivalent ratio:

And whatever you do to the top you do the bottom.

3 Questions:
1) What is the ratio for common colors to total?
2) Give me 2 three part ratios.
3) What is the ratio for dark to light colors?

LEAVE A COMMENT :) and thanks for reading :D

PART 2

heey guuuys :)

So Mr. Harbeck told us to make a scribe about our mistakes and what not.

The mistakes I had on the test was:

Number 5) Eric is able to stop 85% of the shots on goal. If he faces 27 shots on goal, how many goals would likely be scored on him?
- I guessed on that one because I didn't get it. I picked B
I was suppose to make a ratio of stops to total.
Stops 85% ?
------- ------ = ------
Total 100% 27
0.85x27=23

Number 8) A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 5:7. If the width of the photo is 9cm, the length of the photo is
- I guess on that one to, because I didn't get it either. I picked C
I was suppose to make a ratio of w:l
w:l
5:7
9:12.6
9/5=1.8
7x1.8= 12.6

What I had difficulty on was.

Number 17) Use the data in the table below to determine which sports teams have equivalent scored by to scored against ratios.

Team | Scored by | Scored against
Baseball | 10 | 8
Team A | |
Basketball| 115 | 92
Team A | |
Hockey | 6 | 4
Team A | |

Number 18) In a student election Carol gets 60% of the votes. If there were 485 votes cast, how many votes did carol get?

Please leave a comment for the questions !

Stephanie's Ratio Homework.

heeeeeeeeey guuuuuuys :)

So last math class we had to do these questions in the math book. Then Mr. Harbeck told us to pick questions. I picked 12 and 13.

Question 12:
In a class of 32, there are 24 girls.
a) What is the boys to total students ratio?
- The boys to total students would be 8 to 32.The word ratio to that would be girls to total. If I were to simplify it I would 8/2=4 then 32/2=16.
b) What is the girls to boys ratio?
- The girls to boys ratio is 24:8. If I were to put it in a word ratio it would be girls to boys. If I simplify it , it would be 12:4.

Question 13:
A soccer team played 28 games and won 4 out of 7 games. There were no tied games.
a) How many games did they lose?
- The team lost 12 games,
b) What was the teams win-loss ratio?
- If they played 28 games they won 28-12 or 16 games or the 16 games. The ratio 16:12 is the same to 4:3
c) If this trend continues, how many losses would you expect the team to have once they have won 20 games?
- The team would have 15 losses

I have a feeling the answers are wrong :S ... But I tried :)

Stephanie's Coin Math

heeeeeeey happy thanksgiving guuuuys :)

For homework we had to pick two questions:

What is the most common coin in the jar?
- From what I see, pennies.

How full is the jar?
- The jar is 75% or 3/4 full. I say that its 75% full because you can tell that it isn't full all the way to the top.

I know its not much, but its all I've got so far.

PART TWO !

heeeeeeey guuuuuuys (:

So today during math class Mr. Harbeck told us to edit our posts. But first we talked about the US coins then we talked about the Canadian coins.

How full is the Canadian jar?
- The Canadian jar is 75% full, or 1/4. I say that because the US jar is 3/4 or 75%.

How long would it take to fill the jar if you put one coin in each day? starting on January 1,2010
- If you put pennies it would take you 227 years. Then you will finish in April 28,2037

Bob, Stephanie 816. Graphing

Heeeey Guuuuuys (;

3 Things I know about Graphing.

Number One)You need your labels:
A label on the top for title
A label at the bottom
& A label on the side

Number Two) You need to know your graphs:
Circle Graph: Are best for comparing categories to the whole using percents. The sum of the percents in a circle graph is 100%
Line Graph: Are best used for showing changes in data over time.
Bar Graph: Are best for comparing data across categories.
Double Bar Graph: Are best used for comparing two sets of data across categories.
Pictograph: Are best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.

Number three) What you need:
x axis
y axis
numbers
information.

One thing I can improve on is:
Have a paragraph and explaining my graph because I really don't like explaining.

* I think I did this wrong ...

Stephanie's Four4's

Heeeeey Guuuys (;

Hello guys, this is my scibe post for the four4's.
So today in math we had to do the four4's. Then we got homework to find out if (4÷4)+(4÷4)=2 and 4/4+4/4=2 are the same or not.

Answer: I think that (4÷4)+(4÷4)=2 and 4/4+4/4=2 are the same, because there both dividing, and like if you tilt the '/' a little bit then it looks like a dividing sign. So that's why I think that (4÷4)+(4÷4)=2 and 4/4+4/4=2.

Uh, well I think this is wrong but at least I did something :D

Stephaniey's Scibepost September 30, 2009

This one is for question number thirteen (:

13. a) The two circle graphs are meant to represent the same information. Does it appear this way? Explain.
The graphs do not appear to display the same information because D appears to be much bigger and C is much smaller. This could confuse people who do not look at the data.

b) Identify the errors in graph A.
The sizes of the sectors in graph A don't go with their percents.

c) Draw a new graph to represent the data more accurately.

& I'm so sorry if its confusing for you guys !!
