- Define ratio: The relation between quantities (or parts of things)
- Define rate:Compares two quantities measured in different units
1.What is the difference between ratio and rate?
- A ratio is the comparison between two numbers with the same unit and a rate is the is an indication of the measurements of different units per unit.
- Mala is shopping for honey. Her favorite brand is available in two sizes
- Jar 1- 250 mL
- Jar 2-1000 mL
I think jar 1 is the better buy
Here is my thinking:
Jar 1 = 250 ml = $2.29
- 250/250=1
- 2.79/250=0.011=0.011 times 10 =$ 0.11/ml
Jar 2= 1000 ml
- 1000/1000=1
- 9.59/1000=0.0095=0.0095 times 100= $0.95/ml
3.Choose one of the questions on page 61 and answer it.
Shannon buys 12 granola bars for $9.96.
a) Determine the price per bar. Give your answer in dollars and cents.
- 12/12=1
- 9.96/12=0.83
- 0.83 for 1
- It is a rate because it express to quantities in different units.
