Define Rate: Compares 2 quantities/amounts in different units.
The difference between rate and ratio is that ratio compares 2 units of the same group/measurement while rate compares 2 units of DIFFERENT measurements.
The answer to question 5 on page 60.
A) A blue whale eats 8 t of krill in 2 days.
To get the answer you will have to simplify it to unit rate meaning that the second number "2" should be turned into a 1.
So 2 ÷ 2 is 1 and since you have to do the same to the other side, 8 ÷ 2 is 4. As a unit rate, it would be 4t(t=tons)/(/=per) d (d= day).
So without all the annoying stuff in between, it is simply "4t/d". :D
B) The cruising speed of a blue whale allows it to travel 193 km in 10 h.
To get the answer, you will once again have to simplify it for unit rate, meaning that the second number, "10" should be turned into a 1.
So 10 ÷ 10 is 1 and since you have to do the same to the other side, 193 ÷ 10 is 19.3. As a unit rate, it would be 19.3km(km=kilometers)/(/=per) h (h= hour).
So without all the annoying stuff in between, it is simply "19.3km/h". :3
C)A bull moose bellows 15 times in 2½ h.
To get the answer, you will once again have to simplify it for unit rate, meaning that the second number, "2½" should be turned into a 1.
So 2½ ÷ 2½ is 1 and since you have to do the same to the other side, 15 ÷ 2½ is 6. As a unit rate, it would be 6b(b=bellows)/(/=per) h (h= hour).
So without all the annoying stuff in between, it is simply "6b/h". :p
The answer to question 14 on page 61.
A)What was the value of $600 Canadian in euros?
To get the answer you must find the rate of Canadians for euros.
$1 = $0.6940
Simply multiply $0.6940 by 600.
The answer would be $416.4.
B)What was the value of $375 Canadian in U.S. dollars?
To get the answer you must find the rate of Canadians for U.S. dollars.
$1 = $0.8857.
Simply multiply $0.8857 by 375.
The answer would be $332.1375.
C)What was the value of $450 Canadian in Australian dollars?
To get the answer you must find the rate of Canadians for Australian dollars.
1$ = 1.1527
Simply multiply $1.1527 by 450.
The answer would be $518.715.
