Jecelyn's Rate Growing Post

Well here is my blog:

Definitions:
  • Define ratio: The relation between quantities (or parts of things)
  • Define rate:Compares two quantities measured in different units
Questions:

1.What is the difference between ratio and rate?
  • A ratio is the comparison between two numbers with the same unit and a rate is the is an indication of the measurements of different units per unit.
2.Choose one of the questions page 60 and answer it.
  • Mala is shopping for honey. Her favorite brand is available in two sizes
  • Jar 1- 250 mL
  • Jar 2-1000 mL
A)Estimate which is the better buy. Show your thinking.

I think jar 1 is the better buy

Here is my thinking:

Jar 1 = 250 ml = $2.29
  • 250/250=1
  • 2.79/250=0.011=0.011 times 10 =$ 0.11/ml

Jar 2= 1000 ml
  • 1000/1000=1
  • 9.59/1000=0.0095=0.0095 times 100= $0.95/ml

3.Choose one of the questions on page 61 and answer it.

Shannon buys 12 granola bars for $9.96.
a) Determine the price per bar. Give your answer in dollars and cents.
  • 12/12=1
  • 9.96/12=0.83
  • 0.83 for 1
B)Explain whether your answer in part a) is a ratio or a rate.
  • It is a rate because it express to quantities in different units.
4) coin question
  • How long will it take for the jar to be filled in 1 year if you put 1 coin in the jar a day?
PART 2!!!!

A)What would the recipe look like if it had to serve 10 people? Show your calculations.

  • ground beef - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 lb
  • medium onion, diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
  • stalk celery finely diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
  • clove garlic, minced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
  • canned tomatoes, chopped - 14 x 2.5 = 35 oz
  • can tomato paste - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25
  • parsley - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
  • basil - 1.5 x 2.5 = 3.75 tsp
  • oregano - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
  • sugar - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
  • Worcestershire Sauce - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
  • seasoning salt - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
  • bay leaf - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
Now how about 1 person?
  • ground beef - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 lb
  • medium onion, diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
  • stalk celery finely diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
  • clove garlic, minced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
  • canned tomatoes, chopped - 35 ÷ 10 = 3.5 oz
  • can tomato paste - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125
  • parsley - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
  • basil - 3.75 ÷ 10 = 0.375 tsp
  • oregano - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
  • sugar - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
  • Worcestershire Sauce - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp
  • seasoning salt - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp
  • bay leaf - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
