Nhea's Rate Growing Post #1-2 11/1 and 2/09

Part 1 - Ratio - expresses different quantities in the same units.

Rate
- expresses two quantities in different units.

One of the differences between a rate and a ratio is that there is only one type of rate and many different types of ratios.

9. Mala is shopping for honey. Her favourite brand is available in two sizes.

a) Estimate which is the better buy. Show your thinking. I think that the second jar will be the better buy.

b) Determine the better buy. Show your work.

Honey jar 1 = 250 mL = $2.79
250 / 250 = 1

2.79 / 250 = 0.011x10 = $0.11/mL

Honey jar 2 = 1,000 mL = $9.59
1,000 / 1,000 = 1
9.59 / 1,000 = 0.0095x100 = $0.95/mL

-Honey jar 1 is the better buy

12. The rate at which glaciers melt is increasing globally. The Saskatchewan Glacier near Banff has receded 1.5 km in the last 75 years. The Peyto Glacier shown below receded 1320 m from 1923 to 1993. Whic
h glacier had the greater annual rate of melting?

Saskatchewan Glacier - 1.5km = 75 years
1.5 km x 1000 = 1500 m
1500/75=20m/year
Peyto Glacier = 1320 m = 1923 t0 1993 1923 - 1993 = 70 1320 / 70 = 18.857142 -after rounding - 19m/year

The Saskatchewan glacier has the greater melting rate.

Jenny has $1.50 in her jar, while Lauren has $12.50 in hers. Jenny is using American change while Lauren is using Canadian change. Jenny has 150 coins in her jar and Lauren has 50 coins in her jar, both their jars can hold 200 coins to the maximum. What coin did each girl use?

Jenny - 150 coins = $1.50
150 / 150 = 1

1.50 / 150 = 0.01 = $0.01/coin

Lauren - 50 coins = $12.50
50 / 50 = 1
12.50 / 50
= 0.25 = $0.25/coin

-Jenny used pennie's while Lauren used quature's.
