Scribepost, Proportion, bruce 8-16

Hey guys,
Today Harbeck told me to create a post on Proportion.

You can solve proportional reasoning using a fraction, a unit rate and a proportion.
Definition(s)
Proportion-is a relationship that says that two ratios or two rates are equal
As I said before a proportion can be expressed as a fraction, unit rate and a proportion.
Examples
Fraction
60 sit ups in 3 minutes
20 sit ups in 1 minute
You have to find what number makes the two proportions even.
60 sit ups/3 min
20 sit ups/1 min
you have to divide by 3 to get the 20 sit ups in 1 min
Unit Rate
3 plants/0.5m squared
6 plants/1m squared
First you have to find how to get from 3 to 6.
If you know how to do it the answer will be times 2
so do it on both sides and you get 3 plants multiply by 2 is 6 plants
than 0.5 m sqrd multiply by 2 is 1 m sqrd
Proportion
3 plants/0.5m sqrd
? plants/85m sqrd
First you find out what 85 divided bye 0.5 which is 170.
After that you multiply 170 by 3 and you get 510.
Which means the missing number is 510 (510 plants/85m sqrd).
If you don't understand what I mean go to this link
and look at the Key Ideas on page 66
