Fractions By: Laura

Hi everybody! Happy Easter! Hope everyone had an awesome spring break!

Here is my fractions video :)
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/5703295

Sorry...Brianna and I were very hyper that day. But we got the message across. Now let's do some more questions!
Determine the product using 2 different methods:
4 x 1/2

The simplest way to solve this (in my opinion) is to change the whole number into a fraction and then just multiply. To change any whole number into a fraction all you have to do is put 1 as your denominator.

Our new equation:
4/1 x 1/2

Now we multiply the numerators by each other, and the denominators by each other.
4 x 1 =4
1 x 2= 2

Our product is now 4/2. To simplify you divide the numerator by the denominator.

4 divided by 2=2
The final product is 2.

Another way to solve this problem is by using diagrams/pictures.

We started out by representing 4 1/2s because that is what the equation is. Then, by adding them together we get the finished product of 4/2 -or- 2.

Now that we have covered multiplication, let's move on to division!

1/4 divided by 2:

As you can see, we started with 1/4. Then, we divided the entire rectangle in two. Now, we pick one to finish the division. That gives us 1/8.

Now, let's try out what we have learned with a word problem. :)

The ares of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta are the same. The sum of their areas is 1/5 the area of Canada. Express the area of these provinces as a fraction of the area of Canada.

In order to figure this out, we have to divide 1/5 of the area of Canada by 3 provinces. -OR- 1/5 divided by 3.

Each province is 1/15 of the area of Canada.

PART 2:

A fraction multiplied by a fraction:

You multiply the numerators to get the numerator and the denominators to get the denominator. Pretty simple.

A fraction multiplied by a mixed number:

First you have to change the mixed number into a fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator, then adding the numerator to that number. Then that number becomes your numerator and you keep the same denominator. Then you multiply those fractions and you get your answer.

A mixed number multiplied by a mixed number:

OK, so you already know how to change a mixed number into an improper fraction. (WN x d + n) So that's the same method you use for determining the product of a mixed number by a mixed number. You change them both into improper fractions and then multiply. Then, from there you change the improper fraction into a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator and using the remainder as your fraction.

1 3/7 x 3 2/5

1 x 7 = 7

7 + 3 = 10

Improper fraction = 10/ 7

3 x 5 =15

15 + 2 = 17

Improper fraction = 17/ 5

New question:

10/7 x 17/5

10 x 17 = 170

7 x 5 = 35

PRODUCT: 170/35

170 divided by 35 = 4 6/7

PART 3:

Explain:

1 1/2 divided by 3/4

First we have to find a COMMON DENOMINATOR for each fraction. In other words, we have to find a number that 2 and 4 go into evenly, preferably the SMALLEST COMMON DENOMINATOR. The smallest common denominator of 1 1/2 and 3/4 is 4. This means that we change 1 1/2 to 1 2/4 and keep 3/4 the same. Now we divide by figuring out how many times 3/4 goes into 1 2/4.

The answer is 2.

3/4 divided by 1/2.

Again, we have to find the LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR, which we already know is 4. Therefore we turn 1/2 into 2/4 and leave 3/4 the same. Now our job is to find out how many times 2/4 goes into 3/4.

Our answer is 1 1/2. Our denominator changed because when we started to divide, our whole changed from quarters to halves.

Laura's Surface Area Growing Post

In order to find the surface area of this cylinder, we have to first find the areas of all of the shapes it's made out of.

To find the area of a circle we need to find the radius first.

r= d/2

r= 3/2

r= 1.5

Area of a circle= pi X r X r

= 3.14 X 1.5 X 1.5

= 7.06 squared centimeters

Now we multiply by 2 because there are 2 circles.

7.06/2= 3.53 squared centimeters

To find the area of a rectangle we need to find the circumference of the circle first.

C= pi X d

C= 3.14 X 3

C= 9.42

Area of a rectangle= L x W

= 20 x 9.42

= 188.4 squared centimeters

Now we add the 2 numbers together.

188.4 squared centimeters + 3.53 squared centimeters = 191.93 squared centimeters

We already know the area of all of the shapes this triangular prism is made of from the net. Here is how they were calculated:

rectangles= L x W

= 2 x 15

= 30 squared centimeters

triangles= B x H/2

= 15 x 5/2

= 75/2

= 37.5

Now we have to add all of the areas together to get the total surface area.

(30 x 4) + (37.5 x 2)= TSA

120 + 75=TSA

195 squared centimeters= TSA

Again, we already have the areas of the shapes that make this rectangular prism. They are all rectangles so they were all calculated with the same formula: L x W.

Now to add them all together:

(50 x 4) + (10 x 2) = TSA

200 + 20 = TSA

220 = TSA

VOCABULARY:

TSA = total surface area

L = length

W = width

B = base

H = height

pi = 3.14

Here is a video explaining all of this.

Percents %

HEY EVERYBODY! Here is percent.

PERCENT: A percent is an equivalent fraction out of 100.

Our homework is to find the percent of the following fractions in 3 different ways. (I'll cover 1 and leave the rest to you guys).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5/7
One way to find the percent of this fraction is by first, converting it to a decimal. In order to find the decimal equivalent of a fraction, we multiply the numerator by the denominator.
5 divided by 7 = 0.71
Now that we have the decimal, we have to find the percent, by multiplying the decimal by 100. We multiply by 100 because, remember a percent is an equivalent fraction out of 100. A decimal is an equivalent fraction out of 1, so in order to get from 1-100 we multiply by 100.
0.71 X 100 = 71%
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Another way to find percent is by creating an equivalent fraction out of 100. In order to get from 7-100 we have to multiply by 14.2. And remember, what you do to the top, you do to the bottom.

5 X 14.2 = 71

Now our fraction is 71/100

This means that our percent is 71%

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A third way to figure out percent is by using ratio.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So there is 3 different ways to figure out percent. Have fun with the rest!

Question 15

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Here is question 15:

HOW LONG IS THE LINE?

To find the answer, we have to use the Pythagorean relationship. From looking at the graph we can tell that the legs, (green) have lengths of 2cm and 4cm. We have to find the length of the hypotenuse, (red). Our formula is: a squared + b squared = c squared.

a squared + b squared = c squared

2cm squared + 4cm squared = c squared

(2cm x 2cm) + (4cm x4cm) = c squared

4cm + 16cm = c squared

20cm= c squared

By doing this we have figured out the area of the hypothetical square attached to the hypotenuse. Now we have to find the square root of that number to find the length of the hypotenuse.

the square root of 20= 4.4 (approx.)

The length of the line is approximately 4.4cm.

Question 12 :)

Hey everybody! Here is question 12 from our homework on page 93.

Use the Pythagorean Relationship to find the unknown area of each square:

a) Legs: 20cm2
32cm2
Hypotenuse: ?

In order to find the area of the square attached to the hypotenuse, we have to use the Pythagorean relationship. This means we have to find the sum of the area of the squares attached to the legs of the right triangle. (The hypotenuse is the diagonal line connecting the straight lines of the triangle, called legs).

20+32=52

The area of the square attached to the hypotenuse is 52cm2.

b) Legs: 100mm2
576mm2
Hypotenuse: ?

100+576=676

The area of the square attached to the hypotenuse is 676mm2.

c) Leg: 25cm2
hypotenuse: 90cm2
2nd leg: ?

90-25=65.

The area of the square attached to the 2nd leg is 65cm2.

d) Legs: 12cm2
12cm2
Hypotenuse: ?

12+12=24

The area of the square attached to the hypotenuse is 24cm2.

Laura's Pay It Forward

Part 1:

OK, I didn't get to watch the video because I was sick and now it's not working, So I will post part one after I watch it. :)

Part 2:

My pay it forward act of kindness was baking cookies for the bake sale at my church to raise money for the youth group.

I chose this activity because my youth group is very important to me, and also because we help bring people to Christ, and in my opinion that is the greatest gift of all. ♥

I baked cookies.

I helped my youth group.

I did my act of kindness on December 6th, 2009.

Part 3:

My act of kindness went great.

Everybody loved the cookies.

I felt grateful that I could help my youth group.

The youth group leaders are very excited to be able to upgrade the youth group.

I didn't ask the people to "Pay It Forward" because...there were too many people buying the cookies...it would have seemed weird.

Part 4:

The idea of "Pay It Forward" is important because it helps show people that you care.

My act of kindness has made a difference because now people have a great taste in their mouths, and my youth group has some money to work with.

REFLECTION

Next Steps:
Here are some ideas to keep "paying it forward".

1: Facebook has millions of users, and chances are, a bunch of them are your friends. But how much do you really talk to them? One idea would be just to take the time and write on somebody's wall that you haven't talked to in a while. Just a simple "Hi" or "What's up?" They will appreciate it.

2: We all have someone we don't like...I do, you do, our parents do, but what about how that person feels? Maybe they didn't even know they were hurting you and are too shy to ask. My point is, be extra nice to that person. Do something out of the ordinary, because believe it or not, lots of great friendships that have started out as rivalries.

3: Friends are AWESOME! But wow...they can fight if you say the wrong thing! (Believe me...I know about a grudge that has been going on since grade 4...not pretty). Anyways, a good way to prevent that...especially around Christmas time, is to make your friends cards. Or maybe do a "Secret Santa". Those are always fun! Be creative, because the friends you have can't be replaced. ♥

What is the Power of One?

The power of one is very strong, and often underestimated. For example, did you know that Einstein's teacher told him that he would never amount to anything because he wasn't smart enough! But he was one of the smartest geniuses of ALL TIME! Another example is Terry Fox. He had an amputated leg because of cancer, so he decided to RUN across CANADA! He didn't complete his coarse, but because of him we have a Terry Fox run every year, and every year cancer research is getting more and more developed. Because of the power of one.

Would You Have Changed Anything About Your Random Act Of Kindness?

I would have made more cookies, but I ran out of supplies.

How Has Your Experience With "Pay It Forward" Changed You.

I think "Pay It Forward" has made me more aware of the people around me and how I act towards them. It has also made me a better person, in the sense that, now I am thinking of ways to go out of my way for people to show them that I care. Over all, it has had a positive effect on me.

THANKS FOR READING! KEEP PAYING IT FORWARD! ^_^

Laura's Late Scribepost About Squares :)

Hey everybody! Sorry this is late.

OK, so we have 4 squares. Each square is made up of 100 little squares. Each large square is worth 1. That means that each little square would be worth 0.1. Our job is to find out how many perfect squares we can make out of the 4 large squares. A perfect square is a square in which the side lengths are whole numbers. (Numbers without decimals). Our job after that is to find the side length of a square that uses 2 large squares, 3 large squares, and 5 large squares. So, let's find out! :)

We started out with 1 large square. It's area is 1. This makes it a perfect square because 1 is a whole number. Our next biggest square would have an area of 1.21 because we are adding 21 little squares. (11 on the side, 1o on the top). In order to find the area of a square, you multiply the side length by itself. This would not be a perfect square because 1.21 is not a whole number. Here are the next biggest squares up to 4:

1.44
1.69
1.96
2.25
2.56
2.89
3.24
3.69
4

The only perfect square out of all of those numbers is 4. That means that you can only make 2 perfect squares using 4 large squares.

Now, let's find some side lengths!

2 squares: The side length using one square is 1. If we keep adding to that until another square is used up, we will get a side length of 1.4. (14 little squares on each side).

3 squares: The side length using 2 squares is 1.4. If we keep adding to that until we have used up another square we will get a side length of 1.7. (17 little squares on each side).

5 squares: Earlier, we found out that the area for 4 squares is 4. That means that we have to find out the square root of 4 in order to find the side length. That's easy because everybody should know that 2 x 2 = 4. That means that the side length using 4 squares is 2. If we keep adding to that until we have used up another square, we will get a side length of 2.24. (aprox. 22 little squares on each side).

%%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Ratio: A comparison between two or more values measured in the same units. (ex: 5 apples compared to 3 apples. They are both measured in APPLES).

Rate: A comparison between two values measured in different units. (ex: 100km in 1 hour, one is measured in kilometers, the other in hours).

These are the differences between a ratio and a rate: A ratio can compare more than 2 values, but a rate can only compare 2. A ratio can only compare the same units, a rate can compare different units.

Page 60, question 4:
Determine the unit rate in each.

a) An Orca swims 110km in 2 hours. In order to figure this out, I use a ratio table. But since i can't draw one on here, I will just explain the steps. First, you find the rate. The rate in this case is 110km/2h. In order to get a unit rate you have to change the last value to 1. In this case, you would divide 2h by 2 to get 1h. BUT REMEMBER... WHAT YOU DO TO ONE SIDE, YOU DO TO THE OTHER! So, now we have to divide 110km by 2, to get 55km. This means that our unit rate is 55km/h.

I think that pretty much explains how to do unit rates, so lets move on to a question on page 62.

Page 62, question 14.
Conversion rates among currencies vary from day to day. The numbers in the table give the value in foreign currency of one Canadian dollar, on one particular day.

$1.00 Canadian= $0.8857 US= $1.1527 Australian= 0.694 European Union Euros.

What is the value of $600 Canadian in euros?

In order to figure this out, we need to figure out the unit rate. In this case, it would be
0.694 euros/$Canadian

This is our question: ? euros/ $600 Canadian

So far, we have multiplied the Canadian dollars by 600. Now, we have to multiply the euros by 600 because, as I said before... WHAT YOU DO TO ONE SIDE, YOU MUST DO TO THE OTHER! 0.694 X 600= 416.4 This means that the answer is 416.4 euros/$600 Canadian.

Here is a question from the COIN MATH that can be answered as a rate:

How many coins are there per 1 cm of the jar?

PART 2!

1/2 pound ground beef
1 med. onion diced
1 celery finely sliced
1 clove of garlic
14 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1/2 can of tomatoe paste
1 tsp. Parsley
1 1/2 tsp. Basil
1 tsp. Oregano
1 tsp. Sugar
1/2 tsp. Worchestershire Sauce
1/2 tsp. Seasoning Salt
1 bay leaf

This recipe serves 4 people. (It is spaghetti sauce).

1) What would the recipe look like if you had to serve 10 people?

Alright, first how do you get to 10 from 4? Well, you can multiply it by 2.5! That means that you have to multiply all of the ingredients by 2.5.

0.5 x 2.5= 1.25lb ground beef
1 x 2.5= 2.5 med. onion diced
1 x 2,5= 2.5 celery finely sliced
1 x 2.5= 2.5 clove garlic
14 x 2.5= 35 oz can tomatoes chopped
0.5 x 2.5= 1.25 can of tomato paste
1 x 2.5= 2.5 tsp. Parsley
1.5 x 2.5= 3.75 tsp. Basil
1 x 2.5= 2.5 tsp. Oregano
1 x 2.5= 2.5 tsp. Sugar
0.5 x 2.5= 1.25 tsp. Worchestershire Sauce
0.5 x 2.5= 1.25 tsp. Seasoning Salt
1 x 2.5= 2.5 Bay leafs

2) What would the recipe look like if you only had to serve one person?

To get from 4 to 1, you have to divide by 4. So, now we have to divide everything by 4.

0.5/4= 0.125lb ground beef
1/4= 0.25 med. onion diced
1/4= 0.25 celery finely sliced
1/4= 0.25 clove garlic
14/4= 3.5 oz can of tomatoes chopped
0.5/4= 0.125 can of tomato paste
1/4= 0.25 tsp. Parsley
1.5/4= 0.372 tsp. Basil
1/4= 0.25 tsp. Oregano
1/4= 0.25 tsp. Sugar
0.5/4= 0.125 tsp. Worchestershire Sauce
0.5/4= 0.125 tsp. Seasoning Salt
1/4= 0.25 bay leaf

BOB and Laura's Ratio Homework and Test Review

Part to Part Ratios:
1) Blue to orange 4:2
2) Pink to Yellow 2:2
3) Red to Brown 2:3
Part to Whole Ratios:
1) Pink to all 2:22 -or- 1:11
2) Peach to all 1:22
3 Part Ratios:
1) Orange to white to purple 2:1:1
2) Blue to pink to green
Ratio Notation:
2:2
Fraction:
2/2
Decimal:
1.o
Percent:
100%
Equivalent Ratios:
Equivalent Ratios are created by multiplying or dividing each part of the ratio by the same number.
For example: 2:3 = 6:9
I got this answer by multiplying each part of the original ratio by 3, then recording my outcome.
2 x 3 = 6
3 x 3 = 9
6:9
In the same way, this number can be simplified. By using the same number, but different operation.
6 divided by 3 = 2
9 divided by 3 = 3
2:3
*This is also how you know you did an equivalent fraction correctly*.
Here are your 3 questions:
1) Create 2 DIFFERENT ratios, using the SAME 3 colours.
2) What is the decimal form for the ratio yellow to blue?
3) Give to equivalent ratios for the fraction 4/5.
HAVE FUN!!! :)
Ok, it's time for part 2!
Here are the mistakes I made on my test: (Sorry Mr. Harbeck!)
1) Question #8: A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 5:7. If the width of the photo is 9 cm, the length of the photo is...
a) 11cm
b) 12.6cm
c) 14cm
d) 16cm
The correct answer is b. Because if you divide 5 by 7 you get o.71 and if you divide 9 by 12.6 you get o.71. Therefore they are equivalent ratios.
2) Question 10: A survey of students in the school found that 144 had Motorola cell phones, 60 had Sony phones, 48 had Nokia phones, and 36 had LG phones.
What percent of all of the phones were Motorola?
a) 14.4%
b) 25%
c) 50%
d) 77%
The correct answer is 50% because the sum of all of the phones is 288. If you divide that number by 2 you get 144. 288=100% 288/2=144 100/2=50.
3) Question #14: In a group of 84 students surveyed, the ratio of student preference is seven oatmeal eaters to four granola eaters to three toasted O eaters.
What percent (to one decimal place) of the group prefers toasted O's?
The correct answer is 28%. Because the amount of students who like toasted O's is 18. 84/18=4.67. 4.67 x 6=28.o2. (Rounded to one decimal place is 28.) I multiplied 4.67 by 6 because in order to get 18 students I had to multiply the simplified number of toasted O's eaters by 6.
An example of the wrong answer would be 15.1%. (That's what I put). Right now, I'm not really sure how I got that answer, but I will remember for future tests to do the right thing by reading the question more carefully.
Here are 2 questions to get your brains going! (They are from the test but use different numbers).
Eric is able to stop 58% of the shots on goal. If he faces 30 shots on goal, how many goals would likely be scored on him?
A change purse contains 5 loonies, 12 quarters, 15 dimes, 23 nickles and 45 pennies, (it's a big change purse). Compare pennies to dimes using a ratio. (Express in lowest terms).

Coin Math

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!

First, I'm going to answer two questions about the money jar using math.

1. What graph would be best for displaying the data?

I think that it depends on what data you are displaying. For example, if you are trying to represent how many of each coin there is in the jar, a circle graph or a bar graph would be best because they are good for grouping data. However, if you were trying to represent how long it took to fill the jar, a line graph would be the best to use because they are good for displaying the changes in data over time.

2. What is the most common coin in the jar?

Since the money in the jar came in rolls, my estimate would be that the coin with the most pieces in one roll would be the most common. In her scribe post, Brianna said that there were 50 coins in a roll of pennies, 40 coins in a roll of nickels, 50 coins in a roll of dimes, and 40 coins in a roll of quarters. Looking at this data, pennies and dimes have the same amount of coins in their rolls. My estimate is that there are more pennies because they are 10 times cheaper than dimes.

Now that I've answered the two questions, it's time to answer the the BIG one that Mr. Harbeck assigned all of us.

How many coins are in the jar?

Ok, first of all let's see how much money one roll of each coin adds up to.

Pennies: $0.50 (50 coins)

Nickels: $2.00 (40 coins)

Dimes: $5.00 (50 coins)

Quarters: $10.00 (40 coins)

When added together, one roll of each type of coin equals $17.50. We are trying to make $100.00. First, lets make $17.50 into an easier number. another roll of pennies would make $18.00. Plus another roll of nickels would make $20.00, which can be divided into $100.00.

So far, we have $20.00. We have used 2 rolls of pennies, 2 rolls of nickels, one roll of dimes, and one roll of quarters. (270 coins). This means that 2 rolls of pennies, 2 rolls of nickels, one roll of dimes and one roll of quarters is one set. Since 20 multiplied by 5 equals 100, that means we need 5 sets to get the answer.

Pennies: 100 x 5 = 500

Nickels: 80 x 5 = 400

Dimes: 50 x 5 = 250

Quarters: 40 x 5 = 200

500+
400+
250+
200=

1 350 coins!

Conclusion:
There are 1 350 coins in the jar of $100.00.

PART 2:

Today in class, we found out that there are actually 1 280 coins in the American jar. We also found out that, if it was a Canadian jar using loonies and toonies there would be 370 coins. The American jar is 3/4 full, but we don't know how full the Canadian jar is. Our assignments are to figure out how full the Canadian jar is, and to figure out how long it would take to fill each jar if we started on January 1st of 2010.

I'm going to start with the hard question first. How full is the Canadian jar? Well, we know that the American jar has 1 280 coins, and it is 3/4 full. That means that the Canadian jar is going to be less than 3/4 full because it has less coins. However, we need more info right? So, lets divide 1 280 in half.

1 280/2= 640. This means that the Canadian jar is less than 1/2 full.

1 280/4= 320. This means that the Canadian jar is more than 1/4 full.

A fraction between these two would be 3/8.

1 280/8= 160.

160 x 3= 480. This means that the Canadian jar is less than 3/8 full.

A fraction in between these two would be 5/16.

1 280/ 16= 80

80 x 5= 400. This means that the Canadian jar is less than 5/16 full.

A fraction between 1/4 and 5/16 is 9/32.

1 280/32= 40.

40 x 9= 360. This is as close as I can get to 370, but here is a picture representing how full each jar is:

Now, on to the easier questions.

If you dropped one coin in the Canadian jar every day, starting on January 1st, 2010 you would reach $100.00 on January 10th, 1011. Because there are 365 days in a year. On the 365th day, you would have 5 coins left and it would be January 1st. Therefore, you would finish on January 5th.

If you dropped one coin in the American jar every day, starting on January 1st, 2010 you would reach $100.00 on July 9th, 2013. Because 365 x 2= 730. Those are the first two years. The next year is a leap year so you add 361 days to get 1091. That is the 3rd year. Then, you add 199 more days to get to 1 280. 199 days from January 1st of 2133 is July 9, 2133.

Laura + BOB=Graphing ♥

Hi everyone!

Here are 3 things that I know about graphing:

1) Graphs can be distorted.

ex: You can put a break in the y axis.

2) Every graph has to have a Title.

ex: "Rolling Dice" The title goes at the top of the graph.

3) There are many different types of graphs.

ex:
bar graph
line graph
circle graph
pictograph
double bar graph
double line graph

One thing I would have done differently on my assessment is change the intervals on my distorted graph. I didn't really make it distorted, so it looked the same as my original graph.

Thank you for reading my post!

Laura's four4s

Hi everyone!

Today I will be explaining how (4 divided by 4) + (4 divided by 4)=2 and 4/4 + 4/4=2 are the same.

The way I learned it, when you write fractions the line means divided by. Which makes sense, because 4/4=1 whole, and 4 divided by 4 equals 1. (Which is a whole number). Therefore, when you add the 2 wholes together, you get 2 correct?

I hope that made sense. Here is a picture just in case:

Thanks for reading my post! Please leave your comments and don't be afraid to tell me if I did something wrong and I'll do my best to fix it.
