Brianna's Two minutes to Make a Difference Reflection

To make our video better, we added pictures of actual obese people and we cut out minor parts, we also added how you can keep your self from becoming obese. My group members and I also fixed the spelling mistakes in the script.

Our expert was doctor Shane Hartry. We found him quite easily because he goes to Laura's church so we came up with question to ask him and he gladly answered them. Doctor Hartry added a real doctor's perspective on our topic and it helped us understand about obesity better than any website could. He also added more reality to our movie because he showed us how real people are suffering from obesity and are dying daily.

My greatest success in our video was the research. The information was easy to find and to understand. I used a lot of jot notes during this stage in our project. For example if I found something that I didn't know on a site then I would jot it down. This is a good skill to learn because it helps you find the main points in a story ex specially when you are writing.

The frustrating part of making this movie for me was working with my friends because trying to come up with a subject and producing an idea for a movie is very challenging. It's even harder when you are working with three other people and they all have different ideas and want to do things they're own way. To fix this problem we brainstormed a way to make all our ideas work together. We ended up using a little bit of every one's idea to make a good movie.

Two minutes to make a difference it important to grade eight students because we're at the age where we start to understand that not everyone is as fortunate as we are or how the world is changing around us. This activity helps grade eights understand that there is a real world with real people who have problems. Most teenagers are all wrapped up in their own worlds that they don't see what life is really like. It is also a very fun activity that gives students the excuse to work with their friends or to talk to them during class without teachers getting mad at them.

In the future, I will make a difference by donating money to charities. When I'm older I might even start a home for children on the streets because all children deserve a place to call home, where they are warm and safe. I got this idea from a book that I have recently read about a women who did the same things for little boys in London.

Brianna's Fraction Growing Post

Hey everybody, today I will be talking about fractions. You can multiply and divide fractions by whole numbers and other fractions. In my post I'm going to show you how to do it all.

Starting with....MULTIPLYING BY WHOLE NUMBERS:

There are two ways of finding the product of a fraction. This is the first way is straight multiplying:

When you multiply 3 by 4/5, you get an improper fraction. You can't keep an improper fraction, so you have to turn it into a mixed fraction. First you have to find out how many times 5 goes into 12 which is 2, which would be the whole. Then the remainder which would be 2 would go over the five. So the resulting fraction would be 2 2/5.

The second way of multiplying a fraction is with a picture:

To find the product using pictures, first you have to make three groups of 4/5. Then you put all the shaded pieces together to get 2 2/5.

Time for Division

There is only one way to divide a fraction.

You have to divide a fraction using a pictures:

First you have to draw a rectangle and divide it into a half. Then you divide it into three pieces.

Which would give you 1/6.

Finally I'm going to show you how to multiply a fraction by a fraction.

Part 2

This is the second part to my growing post. I will be showing you how to multiply a fraction by a fraction, a fraction by a mixed number, and a mixed fraction by a mixed fraction.

1. Fraction by a fraction a fraction

Multiplying a fraction by a fraction is just straight multiplication, no tricks or conversions necessary.

2. A fraction multiplied by a mixed fraction:

When multiplying a mixed fraction by a regular fraction, you have to first convert the mixed fraction to make an improper fraction.

3. Mixed fraction multiplied by a mixed fraction:

When multiplying a mixed fraction by a mixed fraction, you must first convert them into improper fractions. To do that, first you must multiply the denominator by the whole number then add the numerator. Then when you have your improper fractions, you multiply them together to get your answer. If necessary, you simplify and if the numerator is bigger than the denominator, then you divide them to get a whole number and whatever is left over becomes, your fraction.

Part 3

This is part 3 of my scribe post...and hopefully the last. Anyways this part is going to be about dividing a fraction by a fraction, and dividing a fraction by a mixed fraction.

1. Fraction divided by a mixed fraction:

To divide a fraction by a mixed fraction:
First you have to find the common denominator. In this question the common denominator would be 4. Then you must find out how many times 3/4 goes into 1 1/2 which would be two times with a remainder of 1 third.

2. Fraction divided by a fraction:
To divide a fraction by a fraction, you have to find out how many times the fraction that is doing the dividing goes into the number that is being divided. For example 1/2 goes into 3/4 1 and an half times.

Brianna's Growing Post

In my post I will show you how to find the total surface area of a right triagular prim, a rectangular prism, and a cylinder.

Starting with the Triangular prism:

b=2.3m
h=1.4m

To find the the area of the triangles, you use the formula: bxh/2

bxh/2=A

2.3x1.4/2=A

3.2m2=A

The rectangles in this shape all have different areas.

In this shape there are three rectangles.

The formula that you use to find the area of rectangles is LxW=A.

This the first rectangle.

The second rectangle:

The third rectangle:

To find the total surface are, you add up the area of each shape:

TSA=3.2m+1.61m+0.98+1.87+3.2m

TSA=10.86 m squared

This is how you find the total surface area of a rectangular prism:

To find the total surface area of a rectangular prism, you have to find the area of three sides of the prism; the top, the side, and the front views.

The top view is equal to the bottom of the prism.

The front view is the same as the back.

To find the total surface area, you have to add up the area of each side.

TSA=21+21+43.05+45.05+73.8+73.8

TSA=275.7cm squared

There are two ways to find the total surface area of a cylinder:

Radius=10cm

Height=22cm

The first way of finding the total surface area of a cylinder is using the following formula:

The second way of finding the total surface area of a cylinder:

First you have to find the circumference of the circle. In this question you are given the radius so you have to find the diameter using this formula: rx2=d.

Then you multiply the diameter by pi to get the circumference.

The circumference of the circle is the rectangle's length. So to find the area of the rectangle, you use the formula LxW=A.

To find the area of a circle, you use the formula pi mulitipiled by r squared.

To find the total surface area of a cylinder, you add up the areas of the circles and the rectangle.

Hope I did this all right, please comment :)

Brianna's Scribe Post

Today I am doing questions 5 and 9.

5. Ravi purchased 3 DVDs for $19.99 each. Find the total cost of the DVDs including 5% GST and 6% PST.

*To make this problem simpler, I rounded $19.99 to $20*

$20.00 multiplied by three equals $60.

So $60 is 100%

So if you divide $60 by 100, it would equal $0.60 which is 1%

Then if you multiply $0.60 by 10 then you get $6.00 which is 10%.

If you add up 100%, 10%, and 1% then you get 111% which is equal to $66.60

So the total cost of the DVDs was $66.60.

9. Arjay was thinking of buying a car worth $ 23 000, but delayed purchasing the car for a year. During the year, the cost of the car increased by 3.2%.

a) What was the price of the car when Arjay purchased it?

$ 23000 is 100%

So 23000 divided by 100 equals 230 which is 1%

230 multiplied by 2 equals 460 which is 2%

Then you take 10% which is 2300 and multiply that by 3 to get 6900

6900 +460=7300

7300 is 32% of 23000

So divide 7300 by 10 to get 730 which is 3.2%

730 + 23000= 23 730

Arjay payed $ 23 730 for the car.

b) What was the total cost of the car including 5% GST and 5% PST?

So now 23 730 is 100%

If you divide 23 730 by 10 which would give you 2 373

2 373 is 10%

So if you add 2 373 to 23 000, you would get 26 103

So the total price of the car was $26 103.

Question 12

Sarah has a vegetable garden in the shape of a right triangle. She wants to put fencing around it to keep the rabbits away.

a) What total length of fencing does she need? Give your answer to the nearest hundredth of a metre.

c2- b2=a2

42-32 =a2

16-9=a2

7=a2

the square root of 7 is 2.6 which equals a2.

Sarah would need 9.6m of fencing.

b) If fencing costs $2/m, what would be the total cost of the fencing?

The fencing would cost $19.20, I got this answer by multiplying 9.6m by 2.

Brianna and Nhea's Pay it Forward

Part 1 -
The movie was very sad and touching, one eleven year old boy made a deference. In the beginning it all starts out as a Social Studies project that turns into a world wide movement. To me this one boy had an amazing impact on the people around him. All he did was was feed a homeless man, then that man stopped a women from throwing away her life and from there more people were inspired to help and be kind to one another. In the end the boy, Trevor, was killed for trying to help someone in trouble. In my opinion he went about it the wrong way because instead of involving himself in the fight he could have spoken to the boys or told an adult what was happening. If he tried any of these solutions he might not have died. But over all this movie inspired me to be be kind to people and help them, I think I might even try donating to a charity once in a while. This movie had a very powerful and effective message, the more people that watch it, the more people will be inspired to help out.

Part 2 -
Nhea and I helped kids and adults at Busy Bee Daycare, where Nhea grew up at.
We chose this activity because we like working with kids, and because that's where pretty much grew up and I got to know all the adults and kids. One girl even got really attached to me. I helped the adults clean the tables after snack time, I helped the big kids with their beading, and the little kids their reading. I jocked around with the kids and got to know some of the kids and adults. Today at 4:oo, December 8, 2009.

Part 3
How did your act of kindness go? The volunteering was really fun and very entertaining. Nhea and I got to know the kids better, and one of the staff members, Jerry, told us a whole bunch of jokes. I felt pretty at home because the adults were friendly and the kids were happy to see us. Cathrine, one of the staff members was very friendly and I became slightly attached to her because we talked like we were the best of friends, in my opinion she was pretty cool. The daycare manager, Donna, had a motherly personality, I say this because even though she was strict, she was still kind and warm hearted. Everyone there made me feel warm and welcome I felt very comfortable. The adults seemed very appreciative of our help and the kids were happy to have us around. No, i didn't because they were young and i don't think they would really understand.

Part 4-
I think pay it forward is important because if you help one person then, they may help another person and so the helping chain begins, this shows the importance of helping others. I believe that it made a difference to the kids because we showed them right from wrong, and I hope that it will make them better people in the future.

Brianna's Growing Post

Hey everyone, I would of done this earlier but well my computer is really bad so... anyways let's get down to math!

Part 1

Mr. H said we had to define Ratio and Rate and we supposed to do a question from pages 60 and 61.

Ratio: The comparison of quantities in the same measurement.

Rate: The measurement of quantities in different measurements.

Question 6 on page 60:

6. Gina earns $78.00 for working 6 h. Assad makes $192.50 after working 14 h. Determine each person's unit rate of pay. Who has the greater rate of pay?

Assad has the better pay rate.

Question 10 on page 61:

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is the fastest cyclist? How do you know?

Trevor and Jillian went the same distance. I know this because when I did the math, it resulted with the same answer.

Part 2 This recipe makes spaghetti for four people. I have to find out the amount of each ingredient needed to make spaghetti for ten people.

For Ten people:

3.75 lb ground beef

2.5 medium onion diced

2.5 celery finely sliced

2.5 cloves of garlic

35 oz can of tomatoes chopped

3.75 can of tomato paste

2.5 tsp parsley

3.76 tsp basil

2.5 tsp oregano

2.5 tsp sugar

3.75 tsp Worcestershire sauce

3.75 tsp salt

2.5 bay leaf

To make this recipe for one person:

0.375 lb ground beef

0.25 medium onion diced

0.25 celery finely sliced

0.25 clove of garlic

3.5 oz can of tomatoes chopped

0.375 can of tomato paste

0.25 tsp parsley

0.376 tsp basil

0.25 tsp oregano

0.25 tsp sugar

0.275 tsp Worcestershire sauce

0.375 tsp salt

0.25 tsp bay leaf

Ladies and gentlemen this is the end of my scribe post.

PLEASE COMMENT :)

Brianna's BOB, Ratios

Today in class we talked about the three different types of ratios. We had to come up with questions and ratios using this picture.

Part to Part Ratio:

Greens to Blues
3:3

Odd Colours to Common Colours
9:3
To make 9:3 into a equivalent ratio, you would have to divide 9 by 3 and then divide three by three. Your ratio will then be 3:1.
Part to Whole Ratio:
Blues to Total
3:12
3:12 is 25% and that as a decimal is 0.25.
As a fraction is can be shown as 3/12.
Total to Greens
12:3
Three Part Ratio:
Gold to Silver to Total
1:1:12
Salmon to wild Strawberry to Blues
1:1:3
Three Questions:
1. What are some other ways to make 9:3 into a equivalent ratios?
2. Show three other three part ratios.
3. What are other part to part ratios?
Answer these questions in comments.
BOB Part 2
One of my mistakes was not putting the ratios in lowest Terms. For example:
A normal deck of playing cards has 52 cards in four suits (clubs, diamond, spades, hearts) of 13 cards each. Two suits are black and the other two are red. The ratio of red cards to the whole deck is: a)1:1 b)1:2 c)2:3 d)2:4
I was supposed to put my answer in lowest terms but I forgot to do that and then I got the question wrong. But now I know that even though sometimes in the question it won't say to put it in lowest terms, but I'll always remember to do it anyways.
Another one of my mistakes was that I forgot that if the numbers in a three part ratio aren't divisible by the same number than you can't break them down into lowest terms. For example:
A stable has 39 horses available for trail rides. Of these horses, 26 horses are all brown, 8 are mainly white and the rest are black. Express in lowest terms the ratio of brown horses to mainly white horses to black horses.
a)13:4:2 b)13:4:5 c)26:8:5 d) 39:26:8
This question couldn't be put in lowest terms because all only two out of three numbers were divisible by the same number , but I didn't realize that until I got my test back.
My third mistake was that I guessed without checking over my answer. For example:
A survey of students in the school found that 144 had Motorola cell phones, 60 had Sony phones, 48 had Nokia phones, and 36 had LG phones.
What percent of all the phones were Motorola?
a)14.4% b)25% c) 50% d) 77%
I got this question wrong because I didn't take the time to add up all the numbers to find out the total. When I saw Motorola had 144, I assumed it was 77%.
Two questions that gave me difficulty:
1. Eric is able to stop 50% of the shots on goal. If he faces 26 shots on goal, how many goals would likely be scored on him?
2. In a group of 100 students surveyed, the ratio of students preference is 5 oatmeal eaters, 3 granola eaters, and 2 Toasted O eaters.
Of the 100 students how many prefer oatmeal?
How many prefer Granola?
What is the percentage of students that prefer Toasted O's?

Brianna`s Coin math part 2 Oct. 14, 09

Question 1. How full is the Canadian jar?

The jar is one quarter full. I got this answer because the total coin capacity of the jar is 1480 and 370 is a quarter of that roughly.
Question 2. How long would it take to fill the jar by placing one coin in a day starting at January 1, 2010?

If you take 1,480 and divide that by 365 (days in a year) you will find that it equals four, so that means that it will take four years to fill that jar. The exact date would be January 1, 2014.

Brianna's Scribe Post, Coin Math

Hey Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

On Friday, Mr. H said that we had to answer two questions. The first one was,"How many coins are in a jar, if you got them from the bank?"and the second question had to be one of the blue, purple,or red questions that we made in class on Friday.

1.How many coins are in the jar, if you got them from the bank?

When you get coins from the bank, they come rolled up in bank rolls in certain amounts of its kind is put together to make a roll. For example:

*Sorry I couldn't get the picture*

Pennies=50 coins in a roll $0.50

Nickel=40 coins in a roll is equal to $2

Dime=50 coins in a roll is equal to $5

Quarter=40 coins in a roll is equal to $10

To get $100 in total using these coins, I started with the pennies, multiplied 50 coins by 30 to get 150 coins and then I did the same thing to $0.50 to get $15. Then I multiplied the nickels, 40 coins by 10 to get 400 coins, then I multiplied $2 by 10 to get $20. Then I multiplied the dimes, 50 coins multiplied by 5 to get 250 coins, and then I multiplied $5 by 5 to get $25. Then I multiplied the quarters, 40 coins multiplied by 4 to get 160 coins, and then I multiplied $10 by 4 to get $40.

Then I added up all the coin numbers to get 960.

2. How full is the jar?

The jar is about 3/4 full of coins which could also be shown as 75%.

BOB, Brianna's Scribe Post

Hey everyone, these are the three things I know about graphing:

1. There are six different types of graphs. These six include: Bar graphs, Double bar graphs, Line graphs, Double line graphs, Circle graphs, and Pictographs.
These graphs can be used to represent different types of data.

2. Graphing is a way of organizing different types of data. Fr example, if you roll a dice thirty times, and if you want to find out how many times a number was rolled then you would use a bar graph to find out.

3. Graphs can also be misrepresented to look bigger or smaller than it really are. The scale can be distorted to change the look on the graph and the pictures can be distorted to make a piece of information stand out. When graphing you all ways have to have tittles, labels, and information to graph.
What I Know Now,That I Could Use to Improve my Test.
I could have gotten a better mark on my test if I coloured in my bar graphs and explained what was happening in them better.

Brianna's Scribe post, Four 4's

Hey, guys this is my scribe post about four 4's. It is kind of a complex to figure out how (Four divided by four) plus (four divided by four) is similar to 4/4 +4/4 =2. Well in my scribe post, you will find out.

(Four divided by four) plus (four divided by four) is similar to 4/4 +4/4 =2 because they both represent division and the same answer.

*Sorry I don't know how to make the division sign on the computer*

Question 16 on page 26, scribe post, September.30,09

16. An ice cream store developed the following graph to advertise it's ice cream.

http://www.mytextbook.ca/view.php?p=0845ad67809e1a4076d79f65ae2c465bd0cf9b31&c=0

*Sorry people, couldn't get the picture.*

a) What ice cream store do you think developed the graph?
I think Cool Flavours developed the graph to make themselves look better and to get more customers. It also makes them look liked they earned way more money than they really did.

b) How is the graph misleading?
The graph is misleading because it makes the Cool Flavours look more popular than they really are. It also makes it look like Cool Flavours earned more money, but they only earned 200 000 more than Dairy Tasty.
