Percents %

HEY EVERYBODY! Here is percent.

PERCENT: A percent is an equivalent fraction out of 100.

Our homework is to find the percent of the following fractions in 3 different ways. (I'll cover 1 and leave the rest to you guys).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5/7
One way to find the percent of this fraction is by first, converting it to a decimal. In order to find the decimal equivalent of a fraction, we multiply the numerator by the denominator.
5 divided by 7 = 0.71
Now that we have the decimal, we have to find the percent, by multiplying the decimal by 100. We multiply by 100 because, remember a percent is an equivalent fraction out of 100. A decimal is an equivalent fraction out of 1, so in order to get from 1-100 we multiply by 100.
0.71 X 100 = 71%
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Another way to find percent is by creating an equivalent fraction out of 100. In order to get from 7-100 we have to multiply by 14.2. And remember, what you do to the top, you do to the bottom.

5 X 14.2 = 71

Now our fraction is 71/100

This means that our percent is 71%

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A third way to figure out percent is by using ratio.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So there is 3 different ways to figure out percent. Have fun with the rest!

Monica's Scribe Post (late)

In class we learned that:

Discount: What you save.

Sale Price: What you pay.

1)

For this problem I tried to use a ratio table:

First I fould 1% then I used that to find the

GST:1.75

PST:2.10

The total cost of the backpack would be $38.85

$35.00

$1.75

$2.10

= $ 38.85

2)

100%-40%=60%. So I found 60% out of 35. And then I found the GST and the PST, from that.
Sorry if Im wrong, if you see any mistakes or something that's missing please comment.

Scribepost for percent

4. How many hundred grids are needed to show each of the following percents?
a) 101% We need 2 grids because 1 grid is 100% + 1 more grid that's 1%=101%

b) 589%=6 grids A grid is a 100% and we need six of them to cover 589% We need 5 grids that's completely shaded and 1 grid that's 89% shaded.

c) 1450% 100%=1grid
1000%=10 grids

1400%=14 grids

1450%=
15 grids

9. Copy and complete the following table.

15. A forester recorded the following data on tree types.

a) What is the total number of trees recorded? 1814 b) What percent of the total does each tree species represent?

Scribepost

Today I had to do three questions on what we did recently in math class for scribepost today.

4. How many grids do each percent needs

a) 101%

We all know that 100% is one grid.

100 = 1 grid

101% is one percent higher than one hundred percent but we can not just put another square unit on to the hundred grid (same thing with alot of numbers) so we have to put another one hundred grid to cover that extra one percent.
X 101% = 1 grid (do not do this)
101% = 2 grids (putting another grid to cover the extra one percent is correct)

b) 589%

Again with the stuff above, 100% is one grid and why we can not increase the number of units in a grid. In other words we need to round up to the nearest hundred(always) and never round down. 589 rounded up is 600. Which means we need six 100 grids for this question. Then we just muliply one grid by 600 to complete the answer.

589 rounds up to the nearest 100 = 600
100 = 1 grid
1 x 600 = 600
600 = 6 grids

c) 1450%

Same thing with the other questions, we need to round up the number to the nearest hundred.

1450 rounds up to 1500
100% = 1 grid
1500 x 1 = 1500
1500 = 15 grids
10. A coach asked to give 110%.

a) Just find out the value of 110% in a fraction and in a decimal.

I first convent it into a simple fraction. Since fractions can be out of anything, I put the 110% on top because it is the value out of something. Then I put 100 on the bottom because percents are out of 100. Then from there, I have to simplify the fraction until it is in its most basic form. Dividing it by two is a very common way to simplify a number.

110 = 110/100
110/100 divided by 2 = 55/50

Fractions cannot have a decimal in it, so I had to use an alternative that if they have a relationship with each other we can divide it by the common muliple (relationship) to get a more simplified fraction. For this, they are both divisible by five so we can use it as the relationship. Then I can just divide the fraction by five.

55/50 divided by 5 = 11/10
The value is 11/10.
Now the fraction is in its most basic form (we cannot divide the fraction into another proper fraction; otherwise it is the answer). Now I have to find the value of 110% in a decimal.

Decimals are out of one and percents are out of one hundred. Do not worry, one and one hundred have a common mulitple between each other (by the way, its 100).

1 = 100%
110% divided by 100 = 1.1
110% = 1.1
The value is 1.1

b) What does the statement mean to you?

To me, the statement "Means give it all you got!!!" or "Give it your best!". In a more simple way, try your hardest. Now onto the last and final question I have to do for scribepost today.

14. Julia borrowed $100 from her brother. Julia's brother put a 5.5% interest for every month Julia did not pay him back (seriously, who does that!?). One month later, Julia paid her brother back. How much interest did Julia pay?

Well I solve questions like this in my way (simple, fast, shows you have done your work). I first find the percents I need and add them together to get the answer. There are other ways to get the answer, so you can do it your way when solving questions like these. I first find the five percent. Then I am going to find the half of a percent. After, I am just going to add them together to get the answer.I will not use ratio tables for this question, besides it saves alot of room. :)

$100 divided by 20 = $5
100% divied by 20 = 5%
$5 = 5%
Twenty mulipled by five equals one hundred. That is why I put twenty as the common muliple which I used to divide the number. Then I got the five percent I needed. Now I just have to find one half of a percent.

Both the 100% and $100 is the same so the results will be the same. I then am going to divide 100 by 100 to get one. After, I am going to divide it again by 2 to get one half of a percent.

$100 divided by 100 = $1
$1 divided by 2 = $0.50
$0.50 = 0.5%

Now I am going to add them up together to find the answer of this question.

$5 + $0.50 = $5.50

Julia paid an interest of $5.50

Thank you for reading my scribepost for today and farewell!!!!!

Bruce's 3 Q's on Percents

Hello,
Today Mr Harbeck told us to pick any percent questions and answer them, so here we go.

Pg 148

2)How can you calculate a cost of an item with tax just in one step.
In my opinion I would multiply the original number by a single percent greater than 100.
e.g. 111% of 100=1.11 x 100
=111
Pg 146

2) gst is 5%, pst is 7% and you purchase an item for $100.

a) How would you represent the 5% and 7% on a 100 grid.
Since it's out of 100 I would just color 5 squares representing 5% and 7 squares representing 7%.

b)How much is the gst and the pst.
Since it's out of 100 the gst would be .07 cents and the pst would be .05cents. The reason I thought this is because 7% and 5% wouldn't be $7 and $5 worth of tax so that's why I turned it into cents.

c)How much tax does a person pay all together.
A person would have to pay 12% worth of tax all together.

5)
a)Describe 2 ways you could calculate the total tax of an item.
First way is by using a ratio table. The second way is by using the formula where you multiply the original number by a single percent greater than 100.

b)Which method do you prefer to use? Explain.
I prefer the ratio table method because, it's the method I'm most used to.

I chose to do this question because my computer wasn't showing all the questions I had chosen.

Karra's Percent scribepost

Question 1.

Chris purchased the following items:
  • 2 Binders for $4.99 each
  • 1 math set for $3.99
  • a backpack for $19.99

find the total cost including 5% GST and 7% PST.

My answer is ..

Question 2.

A store discounted items by 50% off the
original price one week. The following
week an additional 10% was taken off the
already reduced price. The regular price
of a CD player was $85.00. What is the
reduced price in the second week?

My answer is ..

Question 3

Describe 2 ways you could calculate the total tax of an item?

In my opinion i would use a ratio table. My other way is by using a formula where you multiply the original number by 100 or more.

Alex's scribe post Feb 03/10

OK, so I had to do any three questions on pages 148, 149, and I think 150 so I choose 4, 6, and 8 on page 148 and 149.
#4
4. Chris purchased the following items:
• 2 binders at $4.99 each
• 1 math set for $3.99
• a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST.
So all of the prices added up of all the items is approximately $34 and I am just going to add the GST and PST together so I get 12% taxes.Well I like to do these kinds of problems with ratio tables so I think I will.

So basically this question asks what is the taxes and the taxes is 12% so that would be $4.08 so the total cost is $38.08 of all the items.
#6
A store discounted items by 50% off the
original price one week. The following
week an additional 10% was taken off the
already reduced price. The regular price
of a CD player was $85.00. What is the
reduced price in the second week?
So first I would find the first discounted price which is 50% off so first I will find out the 50% off discount and I shall use a ratio table.

So that was the first week of the 50% off so here is the second week.

So the first week took off $42 and a half dollars off the original price and then the second week there was $8 and a half dollars taken off the original price so then $42.5-$8.5 is $34 for the radio on the second week.
#8
Copy and complete the following table.
Use 5% GST and the percent of PST
applicable to where you live.
So the items that were purchased are boots $119.99, pants$89.99, gloves$39.99, and a helmet$189.99.What I need to find is the total tax for each and the total cost for each.PST here in this province is 7%.
So for each I will use more ratio tables because I find them easy to work with.I am just going to add the GST and PST together to get 12 to make it easier.
Boots: total tax:$14.40 Total cost:$134.40

Pants:Total tax:$10.80 Total cost:$100.80

Gloves:total tax:$4.80 Total cost:$44.80

Helmet:total tax:$22.80 Total cost:$212.80

Please comment and tell me what I did wrong

Jasmine's Scribepost Febuary 3, 2010.

Question 4.

Chris purchased the following items:

  • 2 Binders for $4.99 each

  • 1 math set for $3.99

  • a backpack for $19.99

find the toal cost inculding 5% GST and 7% PST.

Answer:

$4.99+$4.99+$3.99+$19.99= 33.96

PST & GST- 5%+7%= 12

33.96x 1.12= 38.04

Question 10.

What is the cost for four tires that sell for 85$ each, plus 5% GST and a 1.5 environmental tax?

Answer:

Combining Percents

I will get on with the scribe post (3 Questions from Page 148-149 of my choice)

Q6
Key Information:
CD Player with a cost of $85.00
50% is cut off
Additional 10% was taking off the reduced price

Okay so $85.00÷2 = $42.50 or $42.5
Now we need to find the additional 10% that was reduced.

$42.5÷10 = $4.25
Now we subtract $4.25 from $42.5 which is $38.25, and that is our answer.

Q4
Key Information:
• 2 binders at $4.99 each
• 1 math set for $3.99
• a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST.

Now lets start with the PST and GST. So we know its 5% GST and 7% PST so lets add those together.

5%+7%=12%

Now lets add up the prices of all those items that Chris bought.
3.99+4.99(x2)+19.99=$33.96 (Basically $34).

Now lets put this in a ratio table, cause I think that would be an easier way.
http://i48.tinypic.com/14e8gmb.png
So now $34.00+$4.08=$34.08, which is our answer.

Q9
Key Information:
23,000 Dollar car
cost of car increased 3.2%

a)
Okay so we know if it increased by 50% it would be 46,000.

Okay I really have no idea if I'm correct or incorrect on this one I was playing with the calculator. So if im wrong please correct me.

23,000x0.032=736
23,000+736=23,736

The price of the car was $23,736.00 when Arjay purchased it.

b)
GST 5%
PST 5%
5+5=10%

Scribepost for Feburary 2nd [ foldable ]

Okay guys here is what we did during class.

We copied our homework in to the foldable [ the boots backpack question ]
Live TV by Ustream

then we did another show you know.
Live TV by Ustream

That was pretty much it except for we copied a bunch of notes into our foldable :
.percents can be combined by adding to solve a problem [eg. 5%+7%=12%
.to calculate the increase of a #
.you can add the combined percent amount to the original #
.percents of percents can be used to determine amounts that result from consecutive percent increase or decrease
.you can multiply the original # by a single percent greater than 100
[eg. 112% of 100= 1.12x 10
= 112

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Heey guys..
Today in math we had to do out foldable and do the odd questions in the math textbook..

I'm going to do 1 & 3 .

1.
I did 100x0.112= 11.2 then moved the 2 next to the 1 which gave me 112.

Another way I did is 100.00 x .12 = 12
Then added that to the 100 which also gave me 112.

3. 1st I found 10% then add it to 100 . Then I found 15% then added all of my answers together which gave me 100.25

Now just find 25% of 100 then add it to 100.25.

PLEASE CORRECT ME IF ANYTHING'S WRONG!!

Nhea's Ratio Scribepost, 2/2/10

7. A herd of 100 caribou was moved to a new location. The population increased by 10% the first year and then increased by 20% the second year.

a) Find the population after the second year.

First year - 100 / 10 = 10 = 10%

-100 + 10 = 110

Second year - 110 / 10 = 11 x 2 = 22 = 20%

-110 + 122 = 132
b) Explain why there was not a 30% increase in population over the two years

The increase was not by 30% because the 20% was worked in after the 10 percent was already placed, making it 132.

11. A student is awarded a $1000 scholars
hip and places it in an account that pays 3% simple interest per year.

a) What is the total value of the scholarship
amount at the end of the second year?

First Year - 1000 / 10 = 100 / 10 = 10 x 3 =30 = 3 %
-1000 + 30 = $1030

Second year -
1030 / 10 = 103 / 10 = 10.30 x 3 =30.90 = 3 %
- 1030 + 30.90 = $1060.90

b) What is the single percent increase in value of the scholarship after two years?

(3 % = 30) + (3 % = 30.90) = 60.90 / 10 = 6.09% after two years

Brianna's Scribe Post

Today I am doing questions 5 and 9.

5. Ravi purchased 3 DVDs for $19.99 each. Find the total cost of the DVDs including 5% GST and 6% PST.

*To make this problem simpler, I rounded $19.99 to $20*

$20.00 multiplied by three equals $60.

So $60 is 100%

So if you divide $60 by 100, it would equal $0.60 which is 1%

Then if you multiply $0.60 by 10 then you get $6.00 which is 10%.

If you add up 100%, 10%, and 1% then you get 111% which is equal to $66.60

So the total cost of the DVDs was $66.60.

9. Arjay was thinking of buying a car worth $ 23 000, but delayed purchasing the car for a year. During the year, the cost of the car increased by 3.2%.

a) What was the price of the car when Arjay purchased it?

$ 23000 is 100%

So 23000 divided by 100 equals 230 which is 1%

230 multiplied by 2 equals 460 which is 2%

Then you take 10% which is 2300 and multiply that by 3 to get 6900

6900 +460=7300

7300 is 32% of 23000

So divide 7300 by 10 to get 730 which is 3.2%

730 + 23000= 23 730

Arjay payed $ 23 730 for the car.

b) What was the total cost of the car including 5% GST and 5% PST?

So now 23 730 is 100%

If you divide 23 730 by 10 which would give you 2 373

2 373 is 10%

So if you add 2 373 to 23 000, you would get 26 103

So the total price of the car was $26 103.

Today I am going to tell you how to do the check your understanding.

So we have $35 on some beutiful shoes. There is a sale that makes it 20% off.How I found this is something you should remember. 20% is always one fifth of a 100. So we have to find one fifth of our number.7.So we need to divide it 5 to get 4%.1.40.We need to find 1% so we can add it on to our number.0.35. We add that to our number and get 1.75. I'm sorry I went off track . that 5% is our gst.So we a $7 and add $1.75. So now I have to find the pst. Which is 7%. We already have 1%.We can times that by 2 and add it too 5%.
35 divided by 5=7
7 divided by 5=1.40(divided by 4 gets 0.35)
0.35+1.40=1.75
0.35x2=2%
2%+5%=75=2.35

Tax=4.10
Dicount=$7.00

Telisa's Scribepost Febuary 1, 2010

What we learned was...

Discount : What you save

Sale Price: What you pay

...And how you can show these as a percnt.

For this problem I used a ratio table.

First I found 1% and then used that to find the ,

GST : 1.75
PST : 2.10

The total cost of the backpack would be.. $38.85

$35.00
$1.75
$2.10

--------
$38.85

To double cheack my answer I added the percent of the GST and PST together and found that percent out of 100%.

$35.00 + $3.85 = $38.85

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
100% - 40% = 60% so I found 60% of 35, and then I found the GST and PST from that.
