Althea's coinmath, October 9/09

Today Mr. Harbeck wants us to answer one problem for each color: red, blue, and purple.

The questions i chose are:

1.Does it matter how many pennies there are in a jar?
  • For me it does matter, because you can compare pennies by the total of all the money in the jar. We all know that the total of coins in the jar are 100 so if there are 100 coins probably there are 1/4 of pennies in the jar because it looks like some of the coins are quarters some of it are dimes.
2.How full is the jar?
  • I think it's about 3/4 of a jar because i divided the jar by 4 and it shows that 75% of the jar are covered. If you don't understand what I am talking about just look at the diagram below and it will help you more.
LOOK AT THE DIAGRAM BELOW:

3. How many coins did it take make $100?
  • If your using pennies to make $100 is you have to multiply penny which is worth 1 cent by 1000 to get $100. If your using dime to make $100 is you have to multiply dime which is worth 10 cents by 100 to get $100. If your using quarters to make $100 is you have to to multiply 25 cents by 4 equals to 1 dollar, so if you multiply four quarters by 100 you'll get $100.

I HOPE YOU ALL UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT :]

PART 2 of Coin math

Today we talked about coin math. Then Mr. Harbeck said to add the stuff the we wrote today.

He also said to answer the problem he gave us.

We talked about how many coins are in the jar if you got the money from the bank.

Then we came up of doing a chart to show how to get the number of coins in an American jar.

1st what we did is we have to put one roll for each coins to figure out the values of the USA coins
2nd is we we have to look at the chart and and add another roll for the values that doesn't look good. Like the 1 cent, we added another roll because if the roll is only one then value of it is 0.50 and it won't look good.'
3rd is add all the values to get 25.

For the next chart is we multiplied the coins to rolls for us to get the total. After you get the total you have to add all the total you get from each to get how many coins there are in an American jar.

For us to get the number of coins in a Canadian jar is we did the same thing as the American jar.
we used a chart.

Now I am going to do the problem that Mr. Harbeck want us to do.

1.) How full is the Canadian jar?

The Canadian jar is about 1/4 because 1,280 is 3/4 so when i divide 1,280 by 4 I'll get 320. 320is about 370 so the level of the coins is about 1/4.

Look at the diagram and it will help you more:

2.) How long would it take to fill the jar if you put one coin each day?
START IN JANUARY 1, 2010

-If your using
1 cents it would take 27 years and 118 days( January 1, 2010 to April 28, 2037) because i divide 100 by 0.01 then i got 10,000 days.then i divide 10,000 by 366 days per year.

-If your using 5 cents it would take 5 years and 170 days t0( January 1, 2010 to July 19, 2015) because i divided 100 by 0.05 then i got 2,000 days. Then I divide 2,000 by 366 days per year.

-If your using 10 cents it would take 2 years and 268 days ( January 1, 2010 to September 25, 2012)because i divided 100 by 0.10 then i got 1,000 days. Then I divide 1,000 by 366 days per year.

-If your using a quarters it would take 1 year and 34 days( January 1,2010 to February 4, 2011) because I divided 100 by 0.25 then I got 400 days. Then I divide 400 by 366 days per year.

-If your using loonies it would take 3 months and 23 days
(January 1, 2010 to April 10, 2010) because i divided 100 by 1 then i got 100 days. then i divide 100 by 366 days per year.

- If your using toonies it would take 1 month and 19 days ( January 1, 2010 to February 19, 2010) because i divided 100 by 2 then i got 50 days. Then i divide 50 by 366 day per year.
