Question 8 (page 29):
Braden's new game board has 225 small squares. All of the small squares form one large square. How many small squares are along one side? Show your work.
The square root of 225 is 15. 15x15=225. 15 small squares are along the side.
Question 9(page 29):
Chelsea's square garden has an area of 60 m squared.
a) Estimate to one decimal place the side length of the garden.
Esimate: 7.9
Actual answer: 7.745966692
Rounded answer: 7.7
b) She has 32 m of fencing to go around the garden. Does she have enough fencing? Explain you thinking.
Yes, she has enough fencing. If each side is 7.7 m, multiply that by four(square garden) you get 30.8 which is less tahn 32.

Oh no! Aliens have invaded the earth, and unless we solve three problems using proportional reasong we're screwed! Ahem - I mean DOOMED!
Harbeck has alerted us of out mission - if we choose to accept it - and I shall do my part to keep the earth safe. Or as safe as it is now I guess.... Anyways. here we go! WE CAN DO THIS! ( I hope. What? False hope is bad! No one can live with that type of let down.)
Question 1)
(Question 9: page. 67)
Determine the missing value to make each rate equivalent. Include the units.
a)60 km / 3 h = 120 km / 6 h (x2)
b)$3 / 4 cans = $15 / 20 cans (x5)
c)178 beats / 2 min = 89 beats / 1 min (divided by 2)
d)48 cans / $16 = 192 cans / $64 (x4)
As you can see, each unit rate has been multiplied or divided by a number. As shown in the brackets, 60 km in three hours is now doubled to 120 km in 6 hours. Not bad huh? 3 dollars for 4 cans are now quintupled to 15 dollars for 20 cans. A deal, I guess. 178 beats in 2 min - I'll assume they're heart beats - are now divided by four to get 89 beats in 1 min. And the 48 cans for $16 are now quadrupaled to 192 can for $64. Wow exspensive cans aren't they?
Question 2) That's right aliens, you aren't so tough now, eh?
(Question 20: page. 68)
A breakfast cereal contains corn, wheat, and rice in the ratio of 3 to 4 to 2. If a box of cereal contains 225 g of corn, how much rice does it contain?
225 g divided by 3 = 75 g. So two times 75 g = 150 g. There are 150 g of rice in the cereal. Who could eat that much? An alien perhaps?
I divided 225 by 3 to get 75, and then took that and multiplied the ratio 2 by 75 to get 150.
And now..... Question 3) The aliens are starting to get the message that we are not going to back down. Huzzah! That's my word now people, HUZZAH!
(Question 25: page. 69)
Mark estimates that frogs eat six insects per hour and that dragonfl ies eat nine insects per hour. Assume a frog rests for 8 h each day and a dragonfl y rests for 13 h each day. Neither eats while resting.
a) Determine the daily rate of insects eaten by a frog and a dragonfl y. Which one eats more insects per day?(answers in purple)
Frog: 96 insects/day Dragonfly: 99 insects/day. The dragonfly eats 3 more insects than the frog. Dang nature, you scary!
b) How many insects would a dragonfly eat in a week?
693 insects in a week. That's a lot compared to the little froggie.
c) How many insects would a frog eat in August?
2976 insects in August. Talk about gluttony, well the less annoying insects the better.

Chantell M's Rate Growing Post
What's up guys? Doing well? I hope so. Halloween candy can do some scary stuff to people, am I right? So here we are, my first growing post, and I gotta say I'm actually excited for it.
So Mr. Harbeck said we need to define these two lovely words:
Ratio: Compares two quantities(or amounts, values) that are measured in the same unit.
Rate: Compares two quantities that are measured in different units. (blue word = important)
The difference between the two is rather simple once you look at it. (It doesn't matter if you don't wnat to look.) Ratio compares quantities of the same unit. Rate however compares amounts of different units. See that? Hooray for you. I'm clapping my hands. No really I am.
Harbeck also wants us to choose a question from pages 60 and 61.
Question for page 60:
12. The rate at which glaciers melt is increasing globally. The Saskatchewan Glacier near Banff has receded 1.5 km in the last 75 years. The Peyto Glacier shown below receded 1320m from 1923 to 1993. Which glacier had the greater annual rate of melting?
Saskatchewan Glacier: 1500 m÷75 years= 20 m/year
Peyto Glacier: 1320÷70 years= 18.86 m/year
So according to my calculations, the wonderful Saskatchewan Glacier has a greater annual rate of melting.
Question for page 61:
10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is the faster cyclist? How do you know?
Trevor: 84 km÷3 h= 28 km/hour
Jillian:70 km÷2.5 h= 28 km/hour
Neither of them is the faster cyclist. Both rode at 28 kilometers per hour. (Fast people aren't they? Uh don't anwser this, unless you want to.)
So one more thing before I go my lovelies. I need to revisit our dear old coinmath again. Great eh? I thought so. I need to come up with a question that can be solved with rate, so here I go. Off into the unknown, or rather known because - well you know. Okay on with the math now.
If the jar holds 400 coins, how long will it take to fill up the jar if you place one coin in it each day? (Inspired by the one and only Warren Kaminski. Is that how you spell his surname? Oh well)
one coin/day=400 days(Or one year and 35 glorious days of grueling work and smelly hands.) The answer is obvious because the jar only holds 400 coins.
I hope I don't come across as a know it all with my posts. I'm just trying to make you guys laugh. If you think I'm funny thanks, if not oh well.

2.5 tsp of parsley
3.76 tsp of basil
2.5 tsp of oregano
2.5 tsp of sugart
1.25 tsp of Worchester Sauce
1.25 tsp of Seasoning Salt
2.5 bay leaf
I doubled the original recipe and put in decimals. Then I halved the original recipe and added that to the doubled recipe. Since the recipe serves 4, I guessed havling the amount of ingredents needed wouls serve 2. Doubling the recipe would increase the serving to 8 and adding that to 2 would serve 10.
Now if it were for only one person, I would divide the already halved recipe and that would probably give me the amount needed to make a potion for one.

BOB on RATIOS by:Chantell M of 8-16
So, to make it simple this a BOB on ratios. Got that? Good. So for my BOB on ratios, I will be using the crayon picture. Mr. Harbeck said this would be a dandy way to prepare for a test so why not? Here are some questions I've come up with to hurt your head. I mean help you learn. If you want to up your grade in math, post your answers in a comment.^(this picture right here)
1)Come up with 3 part to part ratios. Do NOT forget to put down a word ratio first!
2)Come up with 2 part to whole ratios and if possible simplify your answer.
3)Take the simplified ratio and explain how simplifying works. Also explain the stpes you took to get your answer.
Okay, so I could only come up with three questions. Big whoop. I understand that you might have come up with more, but I don't give a hoot. It's Harbeck who's breathing down your neck not me. (If your reading this Harbeck, you know you're cool right?)

Hello again my fellows. We had a math test a while back, and boy did I blow it. I got questions wrong, to put it simply.
1) What were mistakes that you made on the test?
Let's see. I wasn't able to simplify ratios on one question. And I also messed up on finding percents. In a future tests I'll remember to use a ratio table when finding percents.
2)Re-written questions.
Eric is able to stop 85% of shots on the goal. If he faces 27 shots on goal, how many will likely be scored on him. (answer in comments)
You have a bag with one white ball, six red balls, eight green balls and three purple balls. In lowest terms, what is the ratio of red balls to the whole bad of balls? (word ratio in red)

Chantell M's Scribepost October 6, 2009Okay how about we skip the introduction and go right to what I'm supposed to put here? No fine, I'll do the introduction. Okay, so in math, Mr. Harbeck handed back our assessments, then as a class we marked them. I didn't get such a hot mark so I'm doing this for extra points. (Aren't I just a little trooper?) Anyways this assignment we had to do is conveniently shortened into an easy to understand acronym. BOB - Blogging on Blogger, or at least I think that's what it stands for. Everyone say hi to BOB.
Three things I know about graphing.
Number one is that you should use certain graphs for certain types of data. For example. You shoulod use a circle graph is you are going to include the total.
Number 2! In a bar graph you can didtort the data by putting a break in the y-axis.
Last but not least number 3, a line graph would be the best way to represent temperature changes or profits of a bussiness. Here is a picture of a regular bar graph.
Things I know now.
The things I learned from doing this assessment, is that you should get all of the instructions before taking down data and organizing the data on a graph. I also learned that various things can be done to misrepresent data on a graph.
Okay, peoples this has been my scribepost. I will NOT be here all week, unless Harbeck tells me to. You know you love my post, I just know you do. Wait, you don't? Why you little.... Just kidding!

Hello people! Well this is my scribepost for the four 4's thing we did in math. Mr.Harbeck - being the cool and epic man he is - asked us to post our opinion about the four 4's. He asked us to say what we think about 4/4+4/4=2 being the same as (4-:-4)+(4-:-4)=2.
I think that the two are the same, because the dots on the divide sign in the second equation can be percieved to represent numbers. So by replacing the dots on the division sign with numbers, it's just like a fraction. eg. 4/4
This is my opinion and in no way reflects the opinions of my fellow classmates. So, don't go telling me I'm wrong because it doesn't match someone else's scribepost, okay? Or I'm going to get you, just kidding! You didn't think I was serious did you?

a) Explain how this graph is misleading.

The graph is misleading because it makes it look like the music profits were really bad in January. It goes from zero to 200 on the graph and then the rest have an interval of 100. The interval's of the graph aren't the same because of the break.
b) From the graph, what conclusion can you make about the profits from January to June?
The profits in June are much better than in January. The graph shows that in June the profits raised by a very large margin.
c) Draw a new graph using a vertical scale from 0 to 600. What conclusion can you now make about the profits from January to June?
Again I don't have a picture of the graph I made, sorry everybody.
