Questions 3, 4 and 5: We never got an expert, I'm not really sure why.

6. I think our greatest success was picking up the garbage, a few noticed and told us to keep up the good work, a car even drove by and the driver told us we were doing a good job. We had gotten 2 full bags of garbage, and we were at for about 30-60 minutes.

7. The thing that frustrated me the most was when we had to get the video up. We had some troubles because we were trying to get the photo's into Windows Movie Maker so it took a few days to resolve the problem.

8. The 2 minutes to make a difference project is important to Grade 8 students because it teaches us that we are all humans and explains the struggles of our world, and makes us think of a way to fix it and make it better.

9. I'll do my best to recycle more, and take part in volunteering.

Asham Surface Area Growing Post

Rectangular Prism

I made this in Microsoft paint, so I gave it fake measurements if thats alright.

Net of Rectangular Prism also made in Microsoft Paint (tell me if somethings wrong because I always mess up the nets)

The formula you use to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism is lxw (length x width). We will do this with all faces to get the area of each face, then add them together, which should give us the surface area.

5cm x 10cm = 50 cm2
5cm x 17cm = 85 cm2
10cm x 17cm = 170 cm2

50cm2+85cm2+170cm2 = 305 cm2

Triangular Prism

Heres is the shape

Here is the Net
The formula to calculate the surface area of a Triangular Prism is bxh÷2 (BASE X HEIGHT ÷ 2)

And heres the answer:
Rectangle = lxw
Rectangle = 2cm x 20cm
Rectangle = 40cm2

Triangle = bxh÷2
Triangle = 2cm x 5cm ÷ 2cm
Triangle = 5cm2

40cm2+5cm2 = 45cm2

Please tell me if I made a mistake, because I usually mess up with Triangular Prism's.

Now last but not least... the cylinder (-.-)
Net of a Cylinder here
Now we have the diameter, but we need to find the radius.
r = d÷2
r = 5 ÷ 2
r = 2.5cm

Now lets find the area of both circle(s)
A = pi x r x r
A = 3.14 x 2.5cm x 2.5cm
A = 19.625cm2 x 2 = 39.25cm2 (AREA OF BOTH CIRCLES)

Area of the Rectangle
A = lxw
A = (pi x d) x w
A = 3.14 x 5cm x 15cm
A = 235.50cm2

39.25cm2 + 235.50cm2 = 274.75cm2

Asham Scribepost on Yesterdays Hmwk

Hey guys. Okay so I did not do the homework for that day, but I did it in class today :D. I believe for scribe 1 I was supposed to put down the definitions. Okay i'll get on with it because I have to go in 15 minutes.

Vertex - a point where three or more edges meet
Face - flat or curved surface
Edge - line segements where two faces meet

Net - For this one, since I didn't bother to add pictures for the other one, I'm going to show an example of what a net is and give a definition in my own words.
Lets use this cube as an example. It's a Three Dimensional Shape, but what if we squashed it. Or what of we "opened it up". It would probably look something like this. So basically by squishing we turned it into a net, at first it was 3D, and now its 2D. This is the Net of a cube.

Thank-you for reading my scribepost. If this is not what I was supposed to do, correct me and I will have it done in the morning kay thanks bye.

Combining Percents

I will get on with the scribe post (3 Questions from Page 148-149 of my choice)

Q6
Key Information:
CD Player with a cost of $85.00
50% is cut off
Additional 10% was taking off the reduced price

Okay so $85.00÷2 = $42.50 or $42.5
Now we need to find the additional 10% that was reduced.

$42.5÷10 = $4.25
Now we subtract $4.25 from $42.5 which is $38.25, and that is our answer.

Q4
Key Information:
• 2 binders at $4.99 each
• 1 math set for $3.99
• a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST.

Now lets start with the PST and GST. So we know its 5% GST and 7% PST so lets add those together.

5%+7%=12%

Now lets add up the prices of all those items that Chris bought.
3.99+4.99(x2)+19.99=$33.96 (Basically $34).

Now lets put this in a ratio table, cause I think that would be an easier way.
http://i48.tinypic.com/14e8gmb.png
So now $34.00+$4.08=$34.08, which is our answer.

Q9
Key Information:
23,000 Dollar car
cost of car increased 3.2%

a)
Okay so we know if it increased by 50% it would be 46,000.

Okay I really have no idea if I'm correct or incorrect on this one I was playing with the calculator. So if im wrong please correct me.

23,000x0.032=736
23,000+736=23,736

The price of the car was $23,736.00 when Arjay purchased it.

b)
GST 5%
PST 5%
5+5=10%

Late Scribepost- 3 questions out of math textbook pg.99

4. Estimate the square root of each number,
to one decimal place. Check with a
calculator.
a) 72 b) 103 c) 55

a) 72
Microsoft Paint wasn't working so I will explain my answer in sentences. We now that 72 is nearest to 81, and 64 the square root of 81 is 9 and the square root of 64 is 8. We know the square root of 72 is between 8 and 9, of course it is closer to 8, because 72 is closer to 64. My estimation is 8.4.

The correct answer is: 8.4

b) 103
Okay so 103 is close to 110, 110's square root is 11. 103 is also close to 100 which square root is 10. 103 is closer to 100, so my estimation of 103's square root is 10.2.

The correct answer is: 10.1

c)55
Okay so 55 is close to 49 (Square root of that is 7), and 64 (Square root of that is 8). 55 is closer to 49, my estimation of 55's square root is 7.7.

The correct answer is: 7.4

5. Estimate each value, to one decimal
place. Check your answer with a
calculator.
a)
√14
Okay, so 14 is close to 9 and 16. 14 is closer to 16.
√9 = 3
√16 = 4

So my estimation is √14 = 3.9!
Correct Answer: 3.7

b)√86
We know 86 is close to 81 and 64. We know its obviously closer to 81.
√64 = 8
√81 = 9

So my estimation is √86 = 9.3!
Correct Answer: 9.2

c)√136
We know 136 is close to 110, and 144, we know it is closer to 144.
√110 = 11
√144 = 12

So my estimation is √136 = 11.4
Correct Answer: 11.6

Pay It Forward

Part 1
So after I finished watching the movie "Pay It Forward" I learned a lot, about empathy, and putting yourself in somebody else's shoes. The movie was about a 12 year old kid who had a system of "Paying It Forward". The system was someone does a good deed, and that person does a good deed for 3 other people, and it just continues in the cycle. I learned sometimes its better to think about other people before yourself, and understand how other people are feeling, which is close to impossible.

Part 2

What was your act of kindness?
My act of kindness was cleaning my room without being asked to. Usually my parents have to ask me to clean it but I decided, to just go in my room and clean it up.

Why did you choose this activity?
I chose to do this activity, because my room was mess, and my Mother was really unhappy about it, so I tried to think about how she was feeling (annoyed probably), so I went to clean my room up.

Who did you help?
I helped my Mom by saving her the stress.

What did you do?
I cleaned my room without my parents asking me to.

When did you do your act of kindness?
I did my act of kindness December 8th of 2009.

Part 3

How did your act of kindness go?
It went pretty good, but I still need to re-clean my room, cause it isn't really that clean.

What Happened?
My mom saw it, she said it was okay, but I have to clean it again on the weekend.. she was happy I did it without being asked to though.

How did you feel?
I felt good about it, usually I have to be asked to do something like that, and this is probably the first time I cleaned my room without being asked to.

How did the person react?
The reaction was pretty good, she was happy that I had cleaned it up, because she says "It looked hideous" but I doubt it was that bad..

Did you ask the person to "Pay It Forward"
Yes I told my Mom to smile when she goes to work, and say hi to everybody she hates. Just a simple smile can be paying it forward.

How did they react to your request
The reaction wasn't "hurray" it was a just an average reaction. I might have to remind her to pay it forward.

If you did not ask the person to pay it forward how come?
I did ask.

What is the idea of "Pay It Forward"? Has your act of kindness made a difference?
I think the idea of "Paying It Forward" is to be nice to somebody, or do a good deed for somebody, without being asked to. Just naturally having empathy, and being nice etc. I don't think my "Pay It Forward" drastically made a difference, but its made a difference in my Mom's day, her blood pressure was lower, and I saved her the shouting. Thanks for reading my "Pay It Forward".

Asham scribepost Q22 Pg 51-54

22. The side view of a ramp is shown
a)3/11, to put that in lowest terms, I will have to find the Greatest Common Factor.

I'll start by making a factor tree
3- 1 x 3 = 3
11- 1 x 11 = 11

As you can see, the Greatest common factor is 1, so..
3/11 ÷ 1 = 3/11, which means it is already in lowest terms, or it cannot be put in lowest terms.

b) Okay so this question I was kind of confused, I dunno what "slope ratio" is so I looked on wiki, and it said rise divided by run so.. 3 ÷ 11 = 0.27 (rounded to the first two decimal places), but really the answer was like 0.27272727.. and so on..

Expressed as a decimal- 0.27
Expressed as percent - 27%
Expressed as fraction - 27/100

Asham scribepost Sept.30 2009(CAUGHT UP WORK)Q6 Pg.14

6.
a) The information of the data provides, how much the plants grew over the following weeks.
b)Weeks 1 and 2 according to the line graph
c) Weeks 3 and 4 according to the line graph
d)Line Graph- Shows how it changed over time
-Could get confusing

Bar Graph- Efficient for data
- Doesn't really show how it changed over time

Pictograph
- Easier to understand, and shows straight foward detail
- That type of graph, would not really fit in with this type of data.

Ashams Scribebost Sept.29 pg.23 Q1(Caught up work)

Hi everybody. This homework on the blogs kinda overdue. I'll skip the intro, and just get started.

1. Travis recorded the following data about how he spends his day.

a) Making a bar graph to help argue this would be easy. On the Y axis label you would put "Time(Hours spent)", and on the X axis, you would put "Activity". Sorry I couldn't make an example graph, ms office isn't working properly.

b) Travis could distort is graph, to make his data look more aggressive, then it actually is.

Thanks for reading my post

Coin Math, Asham

Ok, I'll get on with the post.
1. What graph would be best to display the data?
A bar graph would probably be best because, it would be more accurate, if you used another graph such as a line graph, it would not really make much sense. Bar graphs are the best graphs for comparing things.
2. What is the most common coin in the jar?
The most common coin in the jar I'd say would probably be pennies, considering right when you look at the jar you notice all of the pennies, although there are other coins in there.

Thanks for reading my post, bye.

BOB, Asham 8-16, Oct.6 09

Hi guys, I'll get straight to it, today we had a test in class and we had to do this assignment for extra marks, okay, now I'll start.

3 Things I know about graphing
- Its best to use a certain graph based on the data you have, for example you would not be able to put how weather was over time on a pictograph, that would better suit a line graph

- When graphing, your data must be organized, and you must be able to explain the data you have provided

- Your data cannot be biased

Things about graphing you need to know

When graphing, you need to remember to make sure your intervals are organized and efficient. You need to make sure you use a ruler, and you need to be able to explain all the data that you put on your graph to show that you actually understand what you are doing.

What I know now that would have improved my test

I think on my test, I should have added some coloring to my graph, cause even that got marks, and next time, if I work on it a little longer, and put more effort in it, it would have been better. Also if I had used a ruler, my graph would be better, and if I organized my data more effectively.

THANKS FOR READING MY SCRIBE POST :)
COMMENT PLEASE :)

How are the two equations the same-By Asham

Hi guys. This is the homework we got I think we had to explain how (4÷4) + (4÷4) and 4/4 + 4/4 were the same (sorry I don't know how to make the fractions symbol, so yeah..), now to the feature presentation!

First of all, these equations are the same because, they are both division. Fractions are division, e.g

2 ÷ 2= 1 WHOLE PIZZA (I'm using pizza as an example)

2/2 slices of pizza equal the whole pizza, since there is only 2 slices! Well in a whole pizza they're would be more than 2 slices, but you get the idea.

So in conclusion they are the same, because they are both division, and you can go either way, no matter what your answer will be the same!

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked the colors!

Sincerely,
Asham
